Herrera Hoodoos at Sunset - Part 2

  • April 13, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

A Herrera Canyon trip to hike around and explore the red rocks, hoodoos, and unspoiled desert views that will end with watching the sunset from this rock garden playground. The evening light will only enhance this area, which faces west, for photography. This is a joint meet-up with the Way Out West meet-up group, 6 attendees from each calendar (see below for more).

We are all very fortunate that we already have some wonderful volunteers that are able to drive, but we will need to see if we can get a few more truck/SUV drivers to get us there. So I'm limiting the attendance to 12 for now. (6 from WOW, 6 from this group) If others on the attendance or wait list volunteer to drive that have trucks/SUV's then I will increase the attendee limit accordingly so that more can go.

We will meet at Smith's at 4:00 PM and setup carpooling with our drivers, then head out to Herrera via Paseo Del Norte westbound to I-40. Our destination is about 33 miles out. Detailed directions given at Smith's. We will leave Herrera just after sunset to come home.

Expect to bring $10 for your driver for gas, water, sturdy hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, hat, snacks, tripod if you have one, and of course, your camera! If you have hiking poles or a walking stick bring it along.

Hi, does anyone know how to get ahold of Jennifer from the Hiking group (the one with the 11 year old daughter.) I have some photos of them that I would like to get to them. Thanks.

You all have some fantastic photos posted here! My camera is still AWOL as I left it in my driver's truck and was too busy to be able to get it today. Anyone who belongs to WOW-WE also, please consider posting at least a couple on that page too. We need to show all the hikers how good you all are at photography! ;-)

a big thank you to Frances for organizing this event, including getting us safely there and back. Also, since there was so much Crypto, (and unfortunately I stepped on some myself), thought that everyone might be interested in reading more about this special soil at http://www.soilcrust.org also, please, please, please (to the road-pavers; wherever you are)---do not pave this road--it's just fine the way it is!!

Thanks for the link Peter. The desert, including that areas has such a high density of sand and rock that it is easy to avoid stepping on anything that resembles growth. I remember Woody passing along a caution on an earlier hike regarding this sensitive soil condition. Whenever I saw lichen, grass, cactus, or anything resembling grown I would carefully step around it. There are so many dangers when walking in the desert that it is so important to look down when walking, and if you are looking down, and being aware of these growths, it is so easy to safely step around them.

Thanks for the link Peter. It was making me nervous, so many of us trampling on this fragile soil. Worth reminding us all at the beginning of a trip like this to be very careful.

Why does it seem like there were twice as many people there than the list shows here? Like the straggler Sandi that doesn't appear on the list?

It was posted on a hiking site as well.

I signed up for this trip that got cancled due to the wind and cold. I thought that I would be able to be on this april trip with out having to be on the wait list. Is there room to be on this trip at all? where is Herrerra Canyon located?

    • Wanda

Hi Frances. Just wanted to let you know, I still plan on attending and driving if this is still a go.

      April 10, 2013

    • Frances R.

Thanks Wanda! :) The rain is supposed to stop after this evening so it should dry out over the next 3 days after. Now we only need to keep the high winds away that day.

      April 10, 2013

  • Frances R.

Hello all! With the rain out west in the Herrera area and more predicted for tonight and tomorrow, I'll be doing my best to check on the current road conditions between now and Saturday. With about 16 miles of our journey being on dirt roads, I want to try to make sure that we can still get there without getting vehicles stuck or sliding down hills in the mud. Without any kind of Ranger Station, etc there to contact finding out for sure may be tricky. IF we need to cancel I will keep this posting and only change the date to the next Saturday. Hopefully we will still go this weekend!

The Herrera area is managed by the Rio Puerco BLM so perhaps they can give you some information on their rainfall. I have a weather station and report my precipitation to a national service. I checked the reports for western Bernalillo county and the most rain in that area was a tenth of an inch. They did get as much as a third of an inch in the Sandias, but not so much in the western side of the county. A tenth or even two tenths of an inch would be inconsequential and would be gone in a day.

With Wanda's vehicle we have room for a few more! Remember, I have the list on the other calendar too, so I split the numbers equally between both. We are at 20+ attendees now! Woo-hoo!

    March 15, 2013

    • Frances R.

Not a 4-wheel drive, but a high clearance vehicle like an SUV or pickup. Right now, we enough drivers to take everyone on the attendee list, and I'm working on getting more drivers so that those on the waiting list can also be added to "going". Hang in there! We still have time to plan. :)

      March 15, 2013

  • Ira B.

Do I understand correctly that waiting list people are not yet confirmed?

    March 15, 2013

    • Frances R.

That's correct. But hang in there! If we get another driver then I'll be adding some of those on the wait list to the attendee list and you're second in line! :)

      March 15, 2013

  • Frances R.

With Lew and Cat stepping-up to be drivers from this group and the drivers from the WOW group we have enough vehicles to take everyone on both group attendee lists! Thanks to the drivers for making this trip happen! :) If we get any more truck/SUV volunteers from the waiting lists then I'll be able to add more attendees.

I wish I could, but I cannot "hike!" I am good for walking, but not long distances. Please take some jaw-dropping photos for me!

    March 13, 2013

    • Lew

I am waiting to hear he we can drive beyond the gate, which I am hoping, which means we can drive pretty close to the canyon and unless I am mistaken, within a short walking distance of the pretty stuff. Have not been there, but looking at the satellite image and the hiking book, it looks like you can drive right through the loop that is hiked, i.e. right between the two "halves". I personally do not intend to hike any distance, more like a walk given the equipment I intend to shoot with.
