Guided Night Hikes

Back by popular demand! The El Malpais National Conservation Area is offering 3 night hike/sensory walks this summer. Our budget is smaller, but our creativity is heightened. We will meet at the La Ventana Natural Arch (18 miles south on Hwy 117 from Exit 89) At 8:00 pm. From there we will slowly walk the 1/2 mile trail and make many stops to discover the wonders of the nocturnal world. This is a great program for families and kids of all ages. We will discuss how nocturnal creatures use their senses, experiment on our findings, and wait for our eyes to adjust to see the stars! Please wear closed toe shoes, bring a jacket for cooling weather, and bring one flashlight per family. Please note the meeting location, since the Arch has no address, this site won't take it as a meeting place. The ranger station is 7 miles to the North. For more information call Ranger Jenn at the BLM Ranger Station at[masked]-2918.

This will also be a fantastic opportunity to do time exposure photography, and sunset shot of the sandstone and arch!

The weather didn't want to cooperate at first, but then it did. My grandson enjoyed the part about sparks in his mouth and the bats.

After that last 5-minute shower, the weather was perfect. And your grandson was awesome! Thanks for bringing him out.

Thanks to everyone who braved the weather to come out and explore the night. We still have 2 more hikes scheduled for the summer. The first Sunday of August and September. To quote one hiker from last night " I should have brought the kids, they would have loved this!"

Ranger Jenn was great with our small band of brave souls. It actually turned out to be amazing weather for the walk. Other than a broken serpentine belt on the way home, it was an awesome evening! Thanks, Jenn.

Hey Gang, As of 6:23 pm we have thunder and lightning as well as a few drops of rain all around the Grants Area. But you know what Park Rangers are like; That doesn't scare us! :) If you are not already on the road and you want to hold off until next month I will completely understand. However, I plan to still be at the Arch at 8:00 waiting to see if any brave souls show, and possibly waiting for lightning to subside. So, judge it as you will. If there is lightning all around, we won't be hiking for safety reasons, but bring the camera to get those super cool lightning shots!

No problem Bill, I still have some of your photography hanging at the Ranger Station. You can pick it up after the hike.

So excited to get back to El Malpais! It's such an amazing place!
Does anyone have suggestions for additional photo ops during the day before the night walk?

Lava tubes & caves? We're all in for those!

      July 6, 2013

    • Ranger J.

Great James. If you want to go into the tubes, you will need a cave permit. They are free and you can come get one at the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center. Otherwise you can photograph any of them from outside, and work on exposures with the contrast of such dark lava caves. Hope to see you tonight!

I would love to attend this! It looks so amazing! I work nights Saturday-Wednesday's. If anything like this happens on a Thursday or Friday night I will be there!

Sorry Ryan, right now we have a limited budget and I can only offer these on Sunday nights. I too work an odd schedule of Sunday - Wednesday and ever other Thursday. I'll see if I can swing a Thursday hike sometime around Halloween. Those are always popular! :)
