Ok, back by popular demand is the fall edition of the program we did in May at El Morro National Monument - the Over the Top Photo Hike. The program is scheduled for Saturday, September 8 and will begin at the Old School Gallery, which is 1 mile before you get to the El Morro National Monument entrance road, at 1:30 p.m. This will be an interactive PowerPoint program on photo composition. Following the program we will head over to El Morro National Monument (a $3.00 entry fee for everyone over 16 years unless you have a national parks pass) for some hands-on instruction and a cool photo walk.
For the walk, we will go "over the top" by following the Headland Trail to the top of El Morro and get some fantastic scenic views. We will also walk right next to the partially excavated Atsinna Pueblo and proceed across the top to the north side of El Morro before descending back to the base of the rock and the visitor center. This will be about a 2 mile walk with an elevation gain of a little more than 200 feet.
If you want to stay over in the area and do more exploring on Sunday, there is a small (9 site), first-come, first serve no-hookup campground at El Morro. There is also a bed and breakfast in the area, an overflow camping area with hook ups and several restaurants. For a more complete idea of what is in the area go to www.nps.gov/elmo.
If you want to get away for the day or maybe the weekend and see some cool stuff (I didn't even mention the 1/2 mile tour on a paved sidewalk at the base of El Morro where you can view inscriptions and petroglyphs), make plans to head west on Saturday, September 8. El Morro is approximately 42 miles southwest of Grants on New Mexico Highway 53.
Hope to see you there!
NOTE: Due to the number of people who sign up and don’t come, please register only if you are serious about attending. Thanks!!
