Sunset at Sandstone Bluff

Ok folks, Ranger Dale here. We are back in the photography program business here at El Malpais. I am not sure how well this will fly, and weather is always a gamble, but we are going to do a program "Sunset at Sandstone Bluff" at El Malpais National Monument on Friday, November 30 beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m.

There are a variety of nooks and crannies at the Sandstone Bluff overlook that make interesting foreground shapes when photographing sunsets. There will be a brief program beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m. and then photographers will be able to hunt for locations to sphotograph the sunset, which will be at 4:55 p.m. on that day. (Let's hope for good weather!!)

The overlook at Sandstone Bluff is approximately 6,900 feet above sea level and can be very windy at times. There are no guardrails at the location.

In addition to your photo equipment, you will probably need a wind-proof jacket and gloves, water and possibly a snack. Dress warmly, as this is November in New Mexico!

Fun outing. The color in the sky got pretty intense after the sun was down, but I liked the light on the landscape better before the sun set completely.

I am also attending the "Albuquerque, The Magazine" event which starts at 6pm and I will need to get cleaned up before attending. Makes me think I won't have time to do both events or figure out just how late I would be for the second event. Aside from missing the program, isn't this a shoot I could do any evening?

Anyone interested in car pooling from Albuquerque?

Have just moved back to the southwest after many years in the hinterland, AKA Minnesota. This will be my first time shooting since my return to the area so I am really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the advice on the wind and cold. From an aerial photo, it looks like if we can park by the loop, that it isn't that far to shoot locations? Can you estimate the distance from parking to the actually shoot spots? Appreciate your doing this!
