El Malpais Art Walk

NEW and Exciting! After over a year and a half of art walks we are moving to the Third Sunday of every month, instead of the second. This should provide everyone with enough room in their schedules to have a stress free morning of art and photography! The BLM at El Malpais National Conservation Area have been offering monthly art themed nature walks for over a year. We get many enthusiastic artists, painters, sketchers and photographers out to gain a bit of inspiration. This Meetup had been announced on the Albuquerque outdoor and hiking page for a long time and I felt it was time to invite more photographers directly. :)

We will meet at the North West New Mexico Visitor Center at 9:00 am. Then we will caravan to a different place within the National Conservation Area each Sunday, where all artistic minded folks can set up their easels, or pull out their cameras and let nature inspire. There can be as little or as much walking involved as you wish. There might be artistic inspiration right in the parking area. Or you can join Ranger Jenn on a short walk for a stunning view. Total round trip mileage each Sunday should not be more than about 1 and 1/2 miles. It's more about being outside getting creative, than about hard core hiking.

Bring your own art supplies: paint, canvas, pencils, cameras, or sketch books. We plan to finish by noon or 1 depending on weather and the feelings of the group. Artists are encouraged to linger if they wish.

Dress for changing weather, layered clothing, closed toe shoes, hat, sunscreen, water, and snacks.

Please contact me at the BLM office[masked] if you would like more details. or on the day of the walk, call the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center at[masked] Hope you can join us! :)

I regret to have to say this, but as I sit here at 7am with a hot water bottle on my rumbly stomach trying to decide if I can muster the strength to do this awesome hike for you guys today; I think I'll just have to call it :( However, don't let me stop you from coming out and getting some great inspiration! The high temp today is meant to be 53 degrees with light winds. Perfect! I do so wish I felt better, but the route I want to show you requires a bit of hiking, and scrambling and I know there are no bathrooms for miles. I fully plan to take everyone on this hike for our February art walk, until then, wash your hands, drink tea, and get plenty of rest. Oh wait, that's what I should do. ;) So sorry guys, I really hate being sick. It's not in a Park Ranger's nature to just lie around all day. Please let everyone know that we are canceling. I don't think everyone checks Meet Up first thing in the morning.

Hey Gang, Happy New Year! For our January Art Walk we have had a request to hike the front area of the Sandstone Bluffs. I happen to know some awesome stuff along that stretch so I am only too happy to accommodate. :) We will need to hop a fence and do a bit of bush whacking/ rock scrambling, but the inspiration ( I.E. arches, petroglyphs, lava, and ruins ) are everywhere. I'd say we will walk less than a mile and a half. But it depends on how everyone is feeling, and the weather. Dress warm, good boots, and bring a snack for extra energy. If it turns out to be howling wind or single digit temps, we will come up with another plan. Until then, I hope to see everyone at the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center at 9:00am. (Depending on where you start in Albuquerque, it only takes a little over an hour to drive out here) Hope to see everyone come out :)

I would love to attend one of these things but I am not early to rise and that with the distance to the location make it difficult for me. Might be easier to tempt me out there when the football season is over which is another conflict.
