Well, April certainly has been blowing hot and cold, which can confuse the best of us and perhaps stifle our reading energies just a bit. (Personally, I’ve found myself shifting between a nice Spanish Garnacha, mellow Crispin Lansdowne Cider and feisty Barolo Grappa.) But the truth is, I did give you all the heads-up that our April book selection might take a bit of extra attention—given its length and its “explosive” (?) nature. (You LOVE that, right?) So get to it!
East of Eden by John Steinbeck, 1952, 601 pages
"Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. Here Steinbeck created some of his most memorable characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity; the inexplicability of love; and the murderous consequences of love’s absence." “Its dramatic center is a narrow story of social horror that rests quite disarmingly on the proposition that "there are monsters born in the world to human parents."
“But through the exercise of a really rather remarkable freedom of his rights as a novelist, Mr. Steinbeck weaves in … his story of prostitution a fantasia of history and of myth that results in a strange and original work of art.” (Mark Schorer - New York Times (9/21/52))
Poet Carl Sandburg called the book: "A moving, crying pageant with wilderness strengths." http://www.powells.com/biblio/9780142004234
The books can be found in both the Orleans and Jefferson public libraries and is available online, used, for $4. It is also available as an e-book and audiobook.
Perhaps we might also find a time when our group could view the acclaimed film? That would be nice.
As always, you wonderful people, I ask you to be respectful of everyone in the group. RSVP Yes only if you truly plan to read the book and attend. If, for some reason, your plans change, please change the RSVP so that another happy reader may take your place. I am starting to delete members after 3 times no-show.
