To follow up on Netherland, by Joseph O'Neill-excerpt from NYT review:

But heres what Netherland surely is: the wittiest, angriest, most exacting and most desolate work of fiction weve yet had about life in New York and London after the World Trade Center fell. On a micro level, its about a couple and their young son living in Lower Manhattan when the planes hit, and about the events rippling emotional aftermath in their lives. On a macro level, its about nearly everything: family, politics, identity. I devoured it in three thirsty gulps, gulps that satisfied a craving I didnt know I had.

Netherland is a short, "Gatsby-esque" story told by a Dutchman living in New York City after 9/11.  He's separated from his wife and kid, who flee New York after 9/11.  He meets an East Indian mysterious fellow who introduces him to the world of cricket in NYC, played by an assortment of immigrants in a way that doesn't bear much resemblance to the cricket the narrator knew growing up in Europe.  He becomes immersed in a shady world that parallels, in a way, what's happened in the larger world after 9/11.  It's fascinating, beautifully written, and very moving.

Hey Everyone--

I am looking forward to scheduling our January Meetup.

What do you want to read? Please email your suggestions ASAP. It would help if you could add a line or two of description.

We had some folks suggest that reading a shorter book would be fun. But please suggest whatever you like. I will put 5 titles in a poll and then we'll see which title rises to the top.

Hope your holidays are joyful, peaceful and bounteous in every way.

Lorraine
