The Four Stages of Spiritual Consciousness

In Evelyn Underhill's classic book entitled Mysticism: the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness, published in 1911, she identified four stages of mysticism, or put differently, four steps along the path to enlightenment.

Stage I: A state of discontent with the superficiality of life. Eventually the discontent becomes an impetus to begin seeking for a deeper and more meaningful reason for being.

Stage II: Actively seeking deeper meaning. Eventually a person in this stage of spiritual development begins to find what they seek, which can generally be defined as a connection to a greater whole.

Stage III: This stage has sometimes been called the "dark night of the soul". Having found some degree of unity consciousness, the seeker feels the pain of "reincarnating" back into the limiting nature of their human consciousness. Often their human nature, or ego, can be viewed as an enemy to be destroyed. The result is suffering from an internal battle.

Stage IV: Unity consciousness....

Regardless of which stage each of us is currently in, our reaching sustainable unity consciousness requires that we progress through all three of the preceding stages.

At this Meetup, let's each share any insights that we have gained from the various stages and explore how we can minimize the almost certain growing pains.

Group leader for this session will be Don.

The people who move through this Consciousness group, although they vary with each meetup, always make for an insightful event.

I love how this group draws in educated articulate seekers who ask great questions and give good answers. What a great way to share our journey.
