Values Voters Summit tabling

Join us September 14-15 (Friday and Saturday) for our annual tabling event outside the infamous "Values Voters Summit" (VVS - http://www.valuesvotersummit.org/), to be held again this year at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

American Atheists, Beltway Atheists, and NoVA Atheists will be distributing information and correcting misconceptions about SOCAS (Separation of Church and State) outside the annual VVS and spreading the massage that Secular Values ARE American Values.

(Maybe we should call ourselves the Visible Vocal Seculars - VVS!)

So, if you have the desire and the ability to stand up and debate baggers, SOCAS deniers, and theocrats for a few hours, come help us be part of this spectacle. We could always use some extra hands. Drop by whenever you can.

Our presence will likely be noted by the press, so dress will be business casual. We will be model citizens - cordial but insistent in our defense of the Constitution.

This is always a big event, so we hope you can make it. Bring a video camera if you have one. Photos of last year's event are on this site, as well as www.beltwayatheists.org.

Silence is Consent

Our hours will be:

9 AM - 5 PM Friday

9 AM - 2:30 PM Saturday (so we can go to the Tarara Winery event at 5)

Visible and vocal - two days at VVS.
Many people came out to challenge us, including 3 people claiming to be scientists, and claiming to have scientific proof of the existence of the locally popular bronze-age deity known as "God". None were able to point to a peer-reviewed Science publication to support their claims. This did little to temper their assertions.
As usual, we had to counter ridiculous, ignorance-based malconceptions about science, history, the bible, and the Constitution.
This was our 5th year at VVS. The point is not to convert anyone - there is little chance of flipping someone on the sidewalk in front of a coven of the terminally deluded. No, the point is to no longer allow them to have the floor to themselves. The point is to make our presence known, to familiarize the other side with our existence, and to make sure that our views are included in the conversation. We are there to normalize our presence.
We did that and had a lot of fun in the bargain.

Absolutely necessary. Fun, but ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Hours and hours after I'm home, I'm telling my wife about folks calling themselves "scientists" who were unable to recite the steps of the scientific method. It is shocking (and quite frankly a bit disturbing) to see first-hand those folks who would threaten democracy in the name of God.
