Ham Radio for Makers, Preppers, and Plain Old Nerds

Ham (Amateur) Radio conjures up a lot of imagery in peoples' minds; Many think of a bunch of old guys with unsightly antennas talking to each other on their radios, about their radios. There is more to it. A lot more.

With recent storms that have knocked out power, cell phone and internet, there is a great deal of interest in Amateur Radio for emergency communications.

In addition, Makers and other enthusiasts have gotten interested in it as a way to enable activities such as high-altitude balloon monitoring, and bouncing signals off the moon. Many ham activities combine PCs with radios which enable a wide variety of digital communications.

This is just scratching the surface.

Getting your license has never been easier; Kids pass the test all the time. Join us at Nova-Labs where some of our licensed members will introduce you to Amateur Radio. We will cover the steps to getting your license, how Amateur Radio actually gets used in emergency communications as well as a live demonstration of portable activity.

Here we are: 8 from Preppers: Myself, Joanna+1, Gerald, Nicole+2, Josh. If I show as +2 (or 3), add 5 to the total shown.

Just to confirm, it's OK if this is my first time out at Nova Labs, right? I've been meaning to come to an open house or something, but haven't been able to make one yet.

    Bob,
Is this the free overview class you had mentioned? I just want to confirm if there are any fees in advance, since I am addressing over 120 people.

    February 12, 2013

    • Bob C.

No fees. When there is no fee meetup's UI just doesn't display anything where the fee would usually show up. Confusing. Just to confirm: There is no charge for this event.

I fall more into the "prepper camp", nice to have a fallback when public networks fail.
