We will look in depth at the design and use of a small frame saw for joinery as an
introduction to the fine old tradition of craft folk building their own woodworking tools.
Parts of the class, in particular measurements of your hands for custom handles, are
broadly useful for other custom tool projects.
You will end up with a complete kit and the knowledge to build a small frame saw
customized to fit your hand and your intended uses. The kit will get you started and still
allow you to customize the tool for your purposes. You might end up preferring this saw
over more traditional backsaws.
The project will spark investigation of several topics:
* frame saws – hand saws with a thin blade held in tension
* joinery saws – dovetail, tenon, and others
* sharpening – the principle behind rip versus crosscut
* joinery – hand position and posture for precise cuts
This class is part of the Woodworking with hand tools series at Nova Labs. Even with a
good power tool shop like ours, there is an important role for hand tools.
Class fee includes a complete kit for a small frame saw
