Composites 101

Looking to make some cool stuff out of carbon fiber? NOVA Labs is proud to be include composites fabrication to it's list of resources. To learn about the composites capabilities at NOVA Labs and how to use these functional and innovative materials, join us for an Introduction to Composites 101 class. We will be learning about composite materials, manufacturing methods, and best practices to ensure your project turns out great. Every participant will become checked out to use the composites materials at their leisure. Additionally, every participant will build a take home product to keep and display proudly.

Topics for the class include:

Composite materials (fibers and resins)
Basic structural design
Safety precautions
CNC tooling
Thermoform tooling
Moldless foam tooling
Wet lay-up
Vacuum assisted resin transfer
Thermoset forming
Automated manufacturing (fiber placement)
Surface finishing
2 great projects (an individual take-home project and a group project)

The class will be taught by Bo Pollett, NOVA Labs Member and Aerospace Structures Engineer at Aurora Flight Sciences. The class will be a 1 hour lecture with questions and 2 hours of hands-on fabrication. Expect to learn a lot, have fun, and get inspired! 8 people per class, $25 materials fee.
