Interest group meeting for 3D Scanning

This meeting is for people interested in 3D scanning using things like the Kinect or LeapMotion devices. To kick things off we will talk about the various technologies used for 3D scanning such as LIDAR and Structured Light, scanning various types of objects and environments, and what software is out there to help you. We will have Kinect and a LeapMotion sensors to play with. If you have your own 3D sensor, or something you want to scan, bring it along too!

The meeting will include:

* Descriptions of various cheap commercial sensors (and a few expensive ones)

* Basics behind LIDAR

* Basics of Structured Light

* Scanning different things incuding:

* Handheld objects

* Larger objects like furniture and cars

* Scanning people

* Scanning rooms

* Outdoor environments

* Software for working with scan data

* Turning data into models for 3D printers

This group will be lead by Jonathan Blocksom, who has had various forays into 3D scanning during his twenty year graphics programming career. The talk will be 30 minutes long with plenty of time afterwards for questions and trying out the scanners.

We do not have enough room for everyone to park in our shared parking lot.  Please park across the street, map here: http://nova-labs.org/contact/#parking

    Hi everyone, thanks for attending yesterday. It was really great to see how many folks are interested in this and have already been messing with it. Extra thanks to those of you who shared what you've done so far.

    I put the slides I showed up here:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/8lbl41zjdxv470p/3D%20Scanning%20Overview%2020131215.pdf

    Some takeaways from the meeting I jotted down:
    * Lots of people have 3D printers, some have 3D scanners
    * Kinect, Cubify Sense, homemade scanners
    * We should do something for the Maker faire
    * We had interesting discussions about how to build a homemade LIDAR and how to modify a webcam to view IR patterns
    * Software people are using includes MeshLab, Skanect, 123D Catch

    I've also put up a page on the Nova Labs wiki, which I'll try to keep updated:
    https://www.nova-labs.org/wiki/3d_scanning

    I think the next step is to start a mailing list and schedule another meeting; maybe at the next one we can bring in our scanners and have a scan-off!

    Short, useful, open to conversation & still very to the point, what more can one ask for :)

      Tai, the meet up is next Sunday, not today. Still on for next week right now!

    I just got a Sense scanner last week. It's just ok, definitely not great. I'll bring it to the meeting.

      Neat! I think most of the sensors are still in the ok category, I'm afraid.
