3-Axis CNC Machining 101

A start-to-finish run down of the Blacktoe CNC router.

Interested in learning how to run a CNC machine? Do you have a big project in mind? This course will show you how to cut 3D objects up to 24X48IN wide and 3IN thick. At the end of this class you will be able to take a 2D sketch or a 3D surface model and make a product on the Blacktoe router. This course will use pink insulation foam to make various projects without breaking the bank (or the machine!). If you have a specific project in mind, we will have the opportunity to go over "next steps" to get you moving in the right direction.

This class will discuss some of the projects that are best made on a 3-axis router including:

-Wood engraving
-Metal etchings
-Outdoor/Garden projects
-Thermoforming molds
-Casting molds

Topics will include:

-Importing your CAD model
-Creating a tool path
-Generating G-code
-Material options
-Selecting the proper cutters
-Best practice while cutting
-Basic machine maintenance

Jeff, thanks for the class, I had fun and am working on some ideas for the router. Can you remind me what material we used for the keychain? I've been browsing McMaster-Carr, but can't recall exactly what you said it was.

The keychain material was commercial grade carbon fiber. It was provided for the class by one of the other members. I'm not sure where he got it.

I see this is full but I would love to go - any chance I could stand in the corner?

The majority of the time spent in this class is getting some hands-on with the Blacktoe. Unfortunately, there is only so much room around the machine. The lecture presentation is on the Nova Labs wiki if you want to take a look. http://nova-labs.org/...
