Ed -

This is a very subjective thing.  One suggestion though is to check out Costco -- they have a 90 day return policy, no questions asked, so you can try a laptop without committing to keeping it.  (Do check me on that though, in case their policy has changed.)

You might want to look into something with an SSD drive...in your price range it wouldn't be large, but would be really fast.
