Mathews Arm Loop Overnight Backpacking Trip.

Do It This 16.8-mile loop serves up a weekend classic: waterfall-filled hollows, lush forests, and gorgeous backcountry campsites. This is a beautiful beginner backpacking hike. We will have to get a backpacking permit which is free at the ranger station and it will cost $15.00 per car to get in the Shenandoah Park. I know some of you don't backpack but this hike is for the ones who want to learn and those who do. Plus of course hit a brewery on our way home after this amazing trip.

We're meeting at the park and ride at 7, not 830 as it says on the page? Are we going to figure out rides when we meet or are we doing that now?

    April 18

    • Catorra

Dave, I'm driving and can fit 3 others. Tom is driving his wagon and can fit some too. I don't know about the others.

    April 17

  • Catorra

Ok everyone, the ranger station said we get the permits at the Dickey Station, its only about a mile away from the trailhead. This will be the only stop before we set out. I know we have 2 carpool cars going. If we have any other volunteers to carpool please post on here. Last night was a hit and so far we have a great group of people going... This will be fun and bring camera's since the bears are out this time of year. if you need anything call me or text[masked]

Sorry, I just bailed out. I think I will be all hiked out after returning from 2 weeks in Europe. Best if I take a week or two off.

Before this trip we are going to get together at a brewery and make sure everyone has what they need for this trip. Plus it's a good chance for the hikers to get to know everyone and voice any concerns and ideas to make this hike fun.

I am a beginner hiker, did Little Devil Stairs in October - made it but lagged behind the group. I don't want to slow the group down, I am between a C and B Level with the NVHC.. Do you think this would be ok for me?

    • Catorra

I would recommend McAfee Knob hike first.

When it comes closer to the time of the hike, I will post more on what to bring, wear and so on... If you would like to train for this hike, I recommend on these hikes coming up, bring your pack and load it down.

I have an old gear spreadsheet (so we can avoid too much duplication of gear like water filters etc that can be shared) and list of what to bring and such from a few years back when I took some friends on their first backpacking trip! I would be happy to share that and help out with planning etc as it gets closer to April too!

      3 · January 5, 2014

    • Catorra

Ally that would be great! I think the more experience backpackers can help the new ones. I cant wait for this trip.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
