Sugarloaf Mountain 6.8-Mile Loop & Leesburg Beer Co.

From Wikipedia: "Sugarloaf Mountain is a small (1,282 foot; 391 m) mountain and park about 10 miles (16 km) south of Frederick, Maryland, USA. The closest village is Barnesville, located nearly at the foot of the mountain. The peak of this relatively low mountain is approximately 800 feet (244 m) higher than the surrounding farmland. It is visible from many parts of northern Montgomery County and southern Frederick County, notably from I-270 north of the town of Germantown. Because of its geological and natural history interest, it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1969. It is a notable example of an admission-free, privately owned scenic park."

A piece of trivia:  Sugarloaf Mountain was under consideration to become the presidential retreat but that distinction was bestowed on Camp David near Catoctin.

The hike will begin 10:00 AM at Sugarloaf Mountain and will take approximately 3.5 hours plus one-half hour for lunch. There will be no carpool rendevouz location. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the Leesburg Beer Co. in the Leesburg, VA historic district. This brew pub also serves food.

Great day and hike! A bit chilly and the hike was a good challenge, but we really enjoyed ourselves. Greta's taking a break now ;-) Super crowd, and hope to see you all again when it warms up!

Any decision on Sugarloaf Winery after the hike? If that doesn't work, there is always Dogfish Head in Gaithersburg off 270.

    March 22, 2014

    • Jim

Actually we're sticking to the original plan Mel. The Leesburg Beer Co. will be open tomorrow and they'll be expecting us around 3 PM.

We're still a few weeks out from this hike so things could change, but as of now Leesburg Beer Co. is still closed for renovation. Folks may want to start thinking about alternative locations.

Great suggestions Kate. I'll take a closer look at each and perhaps we'll go to one. Thanks!

I will be unable to hike this Sunday due to previously scheduled plans. I look forward to hiking with this group soon.

Thanks for the heads up Stacy.

I love hiking, but I think the trails will be a muddy, slippery mess after the snow and rain.

    March 18, 2014

    • Jim

I disagree. It is a hard packed trail that will have time to dry out by Sunday. It should not be a problem.

If anyone wants to carpool with me from the Horner Road commuter lot in Woodbridge, let me know.

  • Jim

Hi everyone. The weather forecast for Sunday is breaking down quickly so I moved the hike out one week. I apologize for any inconvenience.

    dog-friendly?

    January 13, 2014

    • Fredo

I took my two boxers there and I did not have any problems. The only signs I've seen are for restricting motos and bicycles on the property.

      February 4, 2014

    • Jim

Yes Liz - it's dog friendly.

LBC is back online so far as I can tell, so that will remain our destination. Kate, please let us know if you find out otherwise. We recently expanded the field for each hike from 20 to 25. I expect that will ensure that the waitlist will continue to clear for each hike at it has for each hike so far. We appreciate everybody's diligence in updating their status recently. It's made a real difference at the trailhead. This should be a great hike, I look forward to seeing you all!

I'd like to carpool. Do you just show up at Walmart?

    January 13, 2014

    • Jim

Yep. The people that want to carpool will meet at Walmart at 9 AM and the carpools worked out there. Sugarloaf is not far away so I imagine some people may drive directly to the mountain. But I will be at Walmart.

      January 13, 2014

    • Jim

Update: There will be no formal carpool rendevouz location for this hike. People can work out carpools on their own or drive directly to Sugarloaf.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
