I can't think of a better crazy photo opp than this one: the artists who make giant creatures and dress themselves up in ways you would never imagine, and then traipse around Roanoke in a parade.
The parade assembles at Community High School at around 11AM. They call it a "wacky little art parade." From the event description:
"Last year a big pink and purple octopus float was constructed. The tentacles were animated by eight dancers adorned in crocheted flourishes resembling coral. The octopus float provided an opportunity for collaboration amongst several different contributors and talents that ordinarily might not have worked together, thereby achieving a primary goal of the festival; connecting people within our community. The octopus float also served as early publicity for the amazing Roanoke Valley Reef exhibition, now on display at Roanoke College."
Your walk-around zoom would be perfect for this event.
After the parade, street performers and other strangeness is scheduled to happen in the Absurdist Street Carnival, on the CHS campus.
"There will be flying chickens, deranged stuffed animals, day of the dead face painting, and more crazy and exciting booths for you to visit. Belly dancers will abound and music will be setting the scene for folks to meander through Renaissance fighters, Fortune Tellers and a Folk Singer illustrating her story with Crankies. Where else could you and your child graffiti a wall together or Build-A-Chicken?"
I'll have a paper backdrop and lights setup at the community high school if anyone wants to come by and help/shoot following the parade.
