    Meant to post this a while back. Someone asked Rui about the if(self) part of the init method and self being nil anyway in a worst case scenario.

    You should avoid referencing self in init and in dealloc (except if(self)) as the object is in a transitional state.

    Reference your properties by their underlying iVar during this period. Something like;

    -(id)init
    { self = [super init];

    if(self) {
    _myProperty = [[MyProperty alloc] init];
    }

    return self;
    }

    If you do this, then the test for if(self) makes more sense since you've no other indication that _property might not be valid before you go assigning a new object pointer to it.

    Jon Reid covers it well here, including a reference to Apple's own documentation which says the same thing.

      Hi Michael. I was having a bit of difficulty to understand the question, since I was thinking in what way the question was related to the theme (iOS Architecture). I have read that article along time ago and I keep that in mind while developing: https://twitter.com/XS...

    I meant to ask... who managed to snaffle the 3 copies of my book?

      I got the top promocode :D Thanks a ton! Crossing it out from my amazon wish list ;) Rui: TBH I doubt Obj-C is the only language in which poor code quality dominates, I'd say it's probably a problem of the whole industry :| I honestly believe we simply do not have enough senior developers who'd teach/enforce the good programming habits to other ppl in the companies..

      Tomasz, for sure it's not the only one. But what I wanted to express was, the person/entity, that has the "duty" or it's better positioned to do that, Apple, doesn't do it, or it could do it in a better way. And that's from where all this conversation has derived. In the end "the truth is out there" and we should look for it. :)

    Guys this might sound like quite a pathetic question but.....I have a software that only runs on Internet Explorer or on GoggleChrome with the IE Tab - the frustrating thing is, it's not compatible with mac atm.

    I've been reading about setting up "parallels" on my Mac - is this the easiest way of doing it or is there another method?

    November 28, 2013

    • Gianluca T.

      The easiest thing is to simply toss that software immediately. If you really have to use it, tough, go ahead with Parallel Desktop.

      VirtualBox is a free alternative (if you don't have/want to purchase Parallels license), but I think it doesn't work reliably on Mavericks (google knows the answer to that).
