Tim,

Is this Thursday the 13th for Talk Speculative Fiction? Or is it for All Genres?

Do we have a meeting on Tuesday (or Monday)?

hey Julie!

Good to "see" you here.  Just looked at the calendar and don't see the next 2 Pensacola meetings on there yet.  Lon or Tim?  If you have a date scheduled, go ahead and announce it and I'll make sure it pops up on the calendar.  The way the Meet Up calendar works is that three people have to agree to attend for the meeting to show, but I've always just "approved" it right away so it's there on the calendar.  I don't know how to work around that so that any of us can add meetings to the calendar, but it's working so far!  Maybe the gurus can figure it out.  heh

Gotta run, it's too nice a day to spend indoors!

I agree with Lon.  One of the most important issues for me is a regular time, pre-set, that I can plan around. I'm sorry to have to miss the meet-up on the 15th.

Does the "A meetup for writers of all genres" meet this Monday or this  Tuesday?

 Tim? Anyone?

Thanks for this great reply and I'm sorry you won't be able to make the meeting.  I work most weekends myself but happen to have this one off.

anyone and everyone - come to the meeting if you can (I'll be posting a location when I get a better idea of how many attendees we'll have) and if not, please post any questions or desires here.  For example, you live in Destin but can't come to the meeting, please let us know so we'll know that Destin is a place we need to get a regional group together.  And of course, if you want to volunteer to help organize it...yeeha!

We've got over 100 members of this group.  I think I only know 20 or so of you!  Come out of the woodwork, writers, the light only burns for a little while.  heh

WRITE ON!

Sad to report I will be working that whole weekend.

[[[NOTE: Some thoughts follow.  It's what seems to be working for the Talk Speculative Fiction meetups.  Your mileage may vary, particularly if you live in one of the more remote areas.  It's by no means a directive or THOU SHALT, just encouragement and an attempt to stir up ideas and conversation.]]]

I can't speak to how the other Pensacola group has been keeping their momentum going--so far they've met while I'm working--but the best advice I can throw out for getting your own local meetings off the ground is for someone in each of those regions to pick a date and time that is convenient to them, announce it to the group, and let who shows up show up. From there, you can adjust accordingly, but the more consistent and convenient your place and time, the more likely you are to have some regulars start coming and also some  "when I get a chance" writers also. :)  Endless planning and waiting for perfect opportunities end up working against ever getting started, you know?  But also: who's to say the meeting has to be the same time/place every time? Don't be afraid to shake things up every once in a while.

Sometimes at the TSF meetings, I have worn a facilitator/moderator hat, sometimes others have, sometimes things have just gone all freeform jazz.  I think it's important to start with a quick "who are you and what do you write/what good writing news do you have" unless everyone at the meetup is a regular... then I still think it's great to give each person the floor for a minute or two up front to share whatever they've been up to in their writing world.  The only other thing that I've been doing for the TFS Thursdays is putting a (non-binding) starter topic out there and seeing "oh the places you'll go" from that. :)

As an aside, I deeply appreciate Tim coordinating getting us the back room at Drowsy Poet; it's made everything more conducive to a good conversation. And also the regulars and infrequent attendees: Your great participation and sense of "we're all in this together, everyone has something they can learn and something they can teach" mindset have been the part I've been enjoying most.

I'm happy to answer any questions, and appreciate Doc's initiative in setting up and keeping the meetup group alive. I think the new direction being discussed may just result in a net positive for all the writers in this group.  If you are thinking "why aren't there more meetups closer to me?" the answer just might be because the person with the right drive to make it happen hasn't stepped up yet.  What if that person was you? Step off the precipice and see how this very welcoming group comes together to keep you from falling.

Cheers and good luck!  I hope to be able to attend meetings in other areas and meet those of you I haven't yet!

Just scheduled a meeting for everyone on Saturday, Oct 15, at 3pm.

Please let me know if I accidentally overscheduled one of our 2 regular groups!

Anyway, we've got lots of new members and we need to find a way to meet that will help everyone who wants/needs a meeting to get to one.

We've got the current 2 meetings in P-cola that seem to be going great.  I hope we can entice the organizers to come to this meeting to let us know their secrets.  One of the ongoing difficulties we've had is the geographical distribution of our writers.  If we can get "little" meetings going on a regular basis in Destin, Milton, Navarre, Ft. Walton, etc, I think we will find members' needs will be more adequetely met.

It's too difficult to have an overall group meeting every month, so I think splitting up into subsets might be the ticket.  Perhaps we can have an "After Action Report" posted to the group, also, so we can share writing insights, tools, etc.

I'll scout out a good location for us and post asap.  If anyone has any good ideas on that, please let me know!  The Drowsy Poet might not be large enough...

Sorry this announcement isn't very polished, I just wanted to give everyone the chance to put the date on their calendar!

Hope to see a lot of you there!

Doc
