I just was not paying attention! This wet weather has spawned a massive slug population. I use rocks and concrete for bed borders and slugs love me for that. I also have plants that overhang the borders- even better! Now is the time to check for these destructive garden pests. I put on disposable nitrile gloves and pick them off and drop them in a bucket of soapy water to kill them. Then I applied slug bait along the edges of the borders. Where I already planted squash and where I have perennials that slugs love, I reapplied the bait around the plants. I also squished the little bugs that roll up when you touch them- they have also been having a feast. I learned that those spittle bugs should get squished, also. I mulched too soon this year or the birds would have taken care of some of this for me.
