Geology Hike with FOW Ambassador Sarah West

This hike covers about a 1.5 miles along a rough, steep trail on the east side of the creek upstream from Valley Green. It can be slippery or muddy in places. We’ll discuss the likely formation of Wissahickon rocks as the result of plate tectonics and identify several different types. This hike is suitable for children over 10 accompanied by a responsible adult. Please bring water and sturdy footwear. For more information contact [masked].

Registration is recommended for all hikes so that you can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. Unless otherwise specified Trail Ambassador hikes may use rocky, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Please wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Long pants are recommended for protection against occasional poison ivy and possible ticks. Bring water and a snack if desired. Unless otherwise noted, children over 7 are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions.

What a great hike! I feel so much more informed about the rocks in the Wissahickon.

See everybody real soon. Remember, cell phone reception is pretty spotty in the park, so posting maybe a waste of time...

I didn't "register" and Michael said that he talked to the guide and it would be okay. I'm sure you are fine!

Is there a limit to how many people can register for this hike? I just went to register, and the site says it's full and won't let me register...

Victoria, the trail guide got back to me. She said that you are welcome to attend the hike anyway. :-)

This sounds like an interesting and educational afternoon - is there a plan to dine locally afterward?

We can absolutely make that happen. Someplace casual and trail boot friendly - how about BBQ at Deke's garage in Manayunk?

I've hiked here casually. It will be great to understand what we are seeing.
