24 hour Defiance

  • Jun 29, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Throughout the hiking season we'll throw in a few crazy events. The 24 hour Defiance is one of those. The concept is easy enough: hike from the Starvation Creek trail head to the top of Defiance and back down again as many times as you can in a 24 hour period. The execution is not easy. Last year was the first year for this annual (?) event. Mayhem as predicted was the standout with three summits. Tamiko, Aron and I did two loops with the rest doing one. Mayhem is on the record thinking he can do four summits which is somewhat hard to conceptualize. That would be 48 miles with 20,000 feet of EG.

We will not hike as a group. Each member will self manage by starting when they want to, pack as they see fit and decide how many loops to attempt. That is not to say that we shouldn't partner up, quite the opposite, but this event will not be led the way our events are typically led. Prior to the date we'll exchange phone numbers etc. to make sure no one gets left on top of the mountain at the end.

Bamm! He is super fast . I think dave aron and tamiko did it in 4.5 last year as a group. They walked. Aron ran I bet. Still awesome to only have a 130 hr at that pace. Must be about 30 sleeping.

Yeah it would seem so :) I see Aron is part of a trail runner meetup also. I have had a few trailrunners blow by me on the TT, Loonwit, Defiance & Elk/Kings. I love to see it, but its just not in my cards :)

I thought Aron might be a "ringer" when I saw his non-hiking shoes, runner's legs, and looked like 25 years old. It was confirmed immediately after we started.

I uploaded some pics I took as the day progressed. If this is not ok? just delete them.. cause I do not know how :)

Aron and I did two laps, everybody else one. Doing that third lap is difficult both mentally and physically. I was packed to go on the third lap but feeling a lot of fatigue and the idea of doing a solo hike at night at the end was more then I was prepared for. I'm expecting stats listed by Aron so I'll let him tell the story but I'll spoil the surprise by saying that he's fast.

Mayhem still claims that he won't be joining us tomorrow but I did discuss the event with him last week. He had what he termed as a failed attempt to do four loops 2-3 weeks ago. He "only" completed three. To his defense he did complete a 56 mile hike from Starvation to Angles Rest which is ~15,000 in elevation gain in one day.

I really want to meet this Mayhem you talk of.

Sorry trail friends :( I did this on 6/21/13. My schedule is not what it used to be. I was ready for 4 laps but my body failed this year. I was much slower & got sick on the second lap descent from rash & nipple bleeds. What a great challenge to even try. I have on 3 occasions not even made 1 loop! So for anyone to show up & even try is a great success!!

It was nice to meet new hikers and see old hikers yesterday. I had some problems going up and just wanted to say thanks for staying by my side. Hope to see you all again :)

What's the tally on the day? I figured Aron would do 2 at least. How about you Magnus? We did our own version on the Starway Scramble. Just tuffer and meaner than Mt. Defiance!

Good luck Magnus! Tim all the best! Our group was great, another hike!!

2 Laps, I really enjoyed going up and down on Mt Defiance Trail. I got to see a lot more people from our group than I did last year.

I purposely used the Starvation Creek trail up and back. I started at 5:15 and finished 11:15, a personal best but only one trip. I was hoping to see others but apparently they were ascending the Defiance trail while I descended the Starvation. Only met Aron at the start. Not sure what the mileage is for this route.

I would only do it once, and would only do it in the company of one or more hikers. If anyone is willing to coordinate start time, please let me know. Otherwise I will drop out.

Just to be more clear, My plan is to be at the Starvation Creek rest area trailhead at 7:45, looks like there is a group of 4 coming from the transit center, I will try to meet up with you at the Trailhead. Fun Times, see you there.
