East Zig Zag Mountain, Burnt Lake overnight backpacking trip. Mt. Hood area.

  • Jul 20, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This hike will take you through the forest of Zig Zag Mountain and to the summit. Along the way we will hike and visit Burnt Lake. We will set up our base camp. We will get a spectacular view of Mt. Hood and other glacier mountains on a clear day.

After we set up, we have options like hiking to the summit of Zigzag Mountain of relaxing and doing short hikes in the area.

The hike pace will be about 2mph and under. If you are one of the people that likes to hike more than 2mph and do not stop frequently to take breaks and enjoy the scenery, this hike might not be for you. This will be a day hike. Please plan on it. If you have to be back by a certain time, please do not sign up for this hike.

We can treat ourselves to a meal after the trip. We will play it by ear.

This will be my first time hiking in East Zig Zag Mountain area. Please be in at least reasonable shape.

Here is the web link for more info:

(if you need maps, you can print them out.)

Hiking time: Approx 4-6 hours depending on the pace.

Distance: Approximately approx. 9.4 miles round trip (out and back)

Elevation gain: 2,300 feet

Difficulty: difficult to very difficult due to the steepness of some areas.

Fees: NW Forest Pass required. If you do not have the pass, you can pay 5 dollars to park.

Bring: 2 liters of water, ten essentials, good hiking boots, good hiking pole(s) (you need them for balance, descending, and not hard on your knees), non cotton clothing, sun screen, hiking snacks.  Please plan accordingly.

We will meet up at a designated area to be determined.

To get to the North Burnt Lake Trailhead, go to the community of Zigzag on U.S. 26 18 miles east of Sandy and 10 miles west of Government Camp. Go north on the Lolo Pass Road (Forest Service Road 18) for 4 miles (two lanes paved). Turn right on Rd 1828 labeled "campgrounds trailheads" (two lanes paved). At mile 0.6 from Lolo Pass Road, turn right on road 1825 onto the bridge going over the Sandy River. There is a gate here that is closed in the winter when there's snow, maybe a few months starting in December. Go past McNeil Campground at mile 0.8 (from Lolo Pass Road). Go past the road to the right that goes to Riley Horse Camp. At mile 2.2, stay straight on 1825, past the left turn to the Ramona Falls Trailhead [masked]), on the road to Lost Creek Campground. Take the road (gravel), past Lost Creek Campground. At mile 2.7 is an unmarked fork, stay right. At mile 3.8 is the trailhead. There are no signs for the Burnt Lake Trailhead except right at the trailhead.

The trailhead is a dead end of the road which is just barely big enough to turn around.

Approx driving time from Portland to Zig Zag Mountain area: 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic.

Suggested donation of 10-15 dollars to carpool drivers depending what kind of vehicle and how much miles per gallon.

If you have any questions, please message me. Thank you. I am looking forward to hosting and leading this hiking event. Also meeting people and breaking the ice. Of course, having a good time.

Excellent!!!! Cloudy and some drizzles when we met. It started clearing out after we passed the gorge. Nothing but sunshine and blue skies. We get to see 6 glacier mountains and of course, Wy'East herslef. Burnt Lake is beautiful especially the mirror reflection of Mount Hood. The people are wonderful and enthusiastic. Thanks to everyone that provided a place to meet and drove. Great times and memories will be trasured. I will see you on a next out adventure.

I also have a NW Forest Pass to use, but I prefer not to drive. Has carpooling already been arranged?

    1 · July 17, 2013

    • Chatchay Ramone de la M.

Not yet. I need to find a person that is willing to let us meet at their residence and arrange carpool from there. I do not want us to park at Gateway Transit Center overnight due to possible car break in. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

I want to add an optional hike for Sunday after we break camp and hike out. I am thinking about Ramona Falls since it is close by. I will leave it up to the group. Thanks.

Oops, now that a date has been added, that conflicts with another backpack I have and knocks me out. I hope to join you on another trip soon! I like the idea of going slowly because I always have to hike really fast on my other trips.
