Star Creek Falls Scramble

I would like to finish this one this year so lets go give it another try! The snow is pretty much gone I hear.

I saw a report on this one, it looks like an adventure for sure! and it was! There are two major Falls on Star creek. The plan is too head off the ridge down to the bottom one ,then climb up it and  go to the top one. From there we go up to ED's Arch. From here we either bushwack back down or loop around Silver Star Mtn back to the Star Way trail.

Rated as very difficult

Distance around 8-12 miles.

Elevation is about 4000 + EG on this one.

Some class 4 rock scrambling, I will bring  a rope and you  bring a  harness if you have one and a line for a prusik.

This is a continuing  exploration not really a hike. So if your uncomfortable about being off-trail a major portion of the time don't sign up.

Weather will need to be good to perfect or we will change the hike or cancel the day.

I will be at the trail head around 9:30 am. Its the one that crosses the Copper creek Bridge.

The last 9 miles (Road 41) is on a rough road with potholes, boulders, stream channels, and washboarding. You could get a flat tire, break an axle, or other damage. Many standard passenger cars do this road, you just have to be slow and careful.

Forest Service Roads are not plowed, and especially during the winter conditions can change at any time. It is wise to carry a shovel and saw in case of slides or blowdowns. Access current conditions before planning a hike.

Driving Directions Thanks to pdx.org

Go North on I-5 from Vancouver, take exit 9, and take highway[masked] miles to Battleground, or take I-205 and then highway 503 from Vancouver to Battleground.

step 1 0.0 Reset Odometer at intersection of highways 502 and 503. Go North on highway 503.

step 2 @5.6 Turn right on Rock Creek Road. There's a sign saying "Lucia Falls, Moulton Falls". Rock Creek Road becomes Lucia Falls Road after a while.

step 3 @14.1 Turn right on Sunset Falls Road. There's a sign saying "Sunset C. G."

step  4 @ 21.8 Turn right on Road 41 which goes through Sunset Campground, over the East Fork Lewis River, and then goes left.

step 5 about @26 Starway Trailhead - junction with Road 4107.

Step 6 go down the road to the creek.

Look for NWW signs. I will put some up.

I think we all bled quite a bit on this one. But those pictures show it was worth it.

Dang my legs are scratched up today! That was quite the day and we only completed about half of it. Next time we start at Ed's trail and head over the bank to the bottom Falls. Thanks all for joining me and Andee for the day!

Good to see that you made it home as well. Did you find your carabiners and lines at the truck? Thanks again for going, that was a fun day.

Wearing shorts through the density and duration of that Devil's Club is totally hardcore. Very impressed.

Man, I'm still sore. And finding Devil's Club thorns in my fingers. But a great hike nonetheless. I'll post some photos in a bit.

Isn't it supposed to rain/downpour every time this hike is attempted? ;)

Wow, this hike had everything. The steepest trail I have ever hiked (Dog Mountain feels like a Sunday afternoon stroll compared to it,) the most scratches on my legs (ok, could have worn long pants, but hey, 80 degrees,) bushes all over, waterfalls (and we are right in them,) great views of Hood, Adams, St Helens, and all the surrounding little mtns like Silver Star, fields of blooming Bear Grass, and a tire to change. Great day, big thanks to the other three, especially Rick for putting it together.
