Practical GPS Class

PLEASE READ: I had to cancel the previous class on July 24 because all nine people with a "Yes" RSVP changed to "No" in the 24 hours before the class. Please do not RSVP for the class unless you are really going to attend! If I have a similar problem with this class, I will not schedule any more of them.

This event is intended to help NW Wilderness members with the selection, configuration and use of a GPS and related software on a PC. Although other organizations offer similar GPS classes, Magnus and I thought it would benefit our group to have a class ourselves as we could tailor it to be what our members want. Also, we plan to have subsequent classes to cover all of the material, especially use of the PC to create and download mapping data to the GPS. Lastly, we can include additional subjects if there is interest.

Note that this class will not include outdoor GPS training as there are other courses at REI, Mazamas, etc, which offer that.

I will be using my Garmin eTrex 30 and BaseCamp PC software for the class. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own GPSs to the class as they should be useful for comparison. However, it's fine to attend the class if you do not have a GPS.

The tentative class outline follows:

• GPS Selection

• PC GPS Software

• PC and GPS Use (PC software installation, creating GPS data on the PC, data transfer to and from the GPS, using the data on the GPS, editing uploaded data on the PC, GPS configuration)

• Online GPS Resources

The location will be mailed to all attendees.

Great job Marc! Finally, I've been waiting to figure out how to download maps and routes (no tracks) to this thing. :)

Very well planned and delivered class that saves a newcomer like me with many days worth of struggle to learn about GPS on my own. Thanks Mark for the class, and for Magnus for hosting it.

Where Am I going? Somewhere NE? Directions are sending me Somewhere NW.....I need a real address ASAP. Some of us are working and don't have the luxury to be glued to their email, Ipod...

Marianne, the zip to the address provided is 97211. His house is on the NE corner of NE Emerson St. and NE 30th Ave near Killingsworth St. It's a two story multi-unit building.

Marianne, I sent the address to attendees at about 6PM yesterday, but if you RSVPed after that you would not have received it. Thus, I just e-mailed it to you.

Any way you can do this on the 8th? I'd like to do this but have had to work last Wednesday and I'll have to work on the 7th.

I can't reschedule the class now that it's full. However, if the class goes well, I'll consider scheduling another one for those who could not attend the first one.

Darn, I am leading a car camp to Obsidian Trail and leaving on that day. Thanks for setting this up and taking your time to share your knowledge.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
