Mystery Trail, one of the hardest Gorge hikes

Mystery it is! as long as the weather holds.  Later it will be too wet to go up. Water runs thru the gully when it rains

Mystery trail

about 6 miles, we will return by either Rock of Ages or prefer Russ Joley if time allows.

You will need a harness and a prusik for this one.

The Island , will be next I think because Andee hasn't done it

Very steep dirt and root climbing on bear trails

usual gear and no guests without a email, please.

cost is dependent on where we end up.

It is cold so change over your gear!!

Thanks all of you for joining me and Andee on one of the great Gorge hikes/climb. It was such a nice day and this one never seems to get tiring. Just like Ruckel Ridge its never boring as you are constantly changing your surroundings as you climb to the top! Also its one of the few with a register, we last did it in April. Perhaps 15 folks had done it between our trips.

I am so very glad I went on this hike. I very much enjoyed our group, and the hike was almost magical. Finding our way to the rock and dirt step that led to that little mossy catwalk that kept wending its way up out of the valley. Very cool.

Mystery Hike 1 me 1 ... finally one of Rick's harder hikes didn't have me swearing at the end. My first a) harness ride, b) using a prusik knot and 3) batmanning. It was a great experience and I have the scars to prove it. Thanks Rick and everybody else who spent the fabulous day with me and the great scenery.

I believe half the group came down Mystery with me last Spring. Andee is the only one who went up with me. Looking forward to a great day!!

My quads were sore for days after MSH. Got to get out more.

My knees are still screaming at me. I want to take it easy by doing easy hikes with very little elevation gain or loss. Be safe and have fun.

We have 2 extra harnesses. Juergen may have an extra 2. We only use the rope for 90 feet.

    October 15, 2013

    • Rich

Juergen, if Rick doesn't have one for me to borrow can I borrow yours?

      October 16, 2013

    • Juergen

If you want, you can pick up mine. I live 12 min away from Gateway, so you could do it on Sat morning as Rick changed time to 8:30 and I should be up by 8.

Cyl, its pretty basic with the gear. If you have done any scrambling and are ok with some exposure. We can get you through it.

    • Rich

Rick, I fall into the same category as Cyl. As long as I can borrow a harness I'm game for it. I've changed my RSVP back to yes based on your reply about the lack if experience.

      October 16, 2013

    • CYL

      Sounds great. I'm in!

      October 16, 2013

  • Rich

Rick do you have an extra harness for me to borrow or should I contact Juergen? Thanks.

    October 16, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

I am changing time to 830 am to let it warm up and dry out a bit. Will send email tonite

I RSVP'd and would like to attend, however I do not have experience with a harness and prusik. I am a strong hiker and love a challenge. Please let me know if it would not be a good idea for me to attend. Also, I do not have any equipment. Please advise. Thanks.

  • peter g.

I'm definitely in good enough shape to do this but I dont have any equipment other than the 10 essentials. Do you think I will need to sit this one out?

    October 15, 2013

    • barbara s.

I'm in the same situation as Peter and have the same question.

      October 15, 2013

    • Rich

Add me to the group of not having climbing equipment as well.

      October 15, 2013

I bought some loafers which is indicative of my life style lately so I'm headed to the coast. Thanks though,

    • Rick L. J.

thanks Janice for your honesty. Keep going with Craig and you will be ready soon.

Hey Rick, I was promoted to "Attending", but still have not found a replacement for work this weekend. Could still happen, but dropped myself to "Not attending". If it works out, I will meet at the TH. thanks - Mark

I have an issue with heights, so I'm afraid that counts me out. Have fun all!

    October 14, 2013

  • Katya

The moment of truth: last time we hiked down this trail, I misjudged the height of a rock I was climbing down and almost fell from a cliff. Luckily, Olga was nearby and helped me regain my balance. The bottom line - this is a dangerous hike with some scary exposures, but also a very fun one. I have a medical issue and don't think I want to climb this on painkillers, they make me disoriented.

I have gear for you Henry.

Interested in The Gap to the Indian Pits, where is that?

    1 · October 11, 2013

  • Craig G

You could go up Mystery, head east for 0.8 miles ontrail , follow the Yeon east ridge down the NE buttress, then follow Tumalt creek north or NW to the road. No yellowjackets this time. That would be a ridiculous hike. Maybe too long - next spring?
    Or head down ROA...

    October 10, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

Up mystery we came down in the spring. Munra South is a 12 hour day with the short cut to the 429. Hmm new name but i hate to see you miss it to. Be good to finally meet you Janice

Hmmm, currently have to work (thus the "wait list"), but will try to open the day. Hate to miss one of your adventure hikes, Rick

  • EricPeterson

    Up Mystery or down?

    October 10, 2013

  • Craig G

You could do munra south to the plateau and come around and north to the indian pits then down the rockslide...

    October 10, 2013

  • Craig G

I wish I could go. Have the kids that day. I have a real doozy I would propose.

I've heard about the elevator shaft......none of the others.

    October 10, 2013

  • Katya

I haven't done any of these but Mystery, so guess it's the opposite preference for me
