McNeil Point hike

Back from my trip and ready to start hiking again. I've been intending to go up to McNeil Point all season but it never happened so let's do that hike on October 26th.

Early weather reports call for nice weather next weekend so we might get some nice views from the top but the hike is rain or shine. Probably should call that snow or shine. I've only been up there once 2-3 years ago but remember it as a nice hike. Not super hard but well worth it.

Distance: 13 miles

Elevation gain: 3,200 feet

Difficulty: Difficult due to distance and possibly snow conditions on top.

Hiking time: 6-7 hours car to car

Distance from Portland: about 100 miles RT, $10 to drivers

Bring: Expect winter conditions so extra layers of clothes, ten essentials, food, drink. I'm bringing micro spikes but they are not required.

What was condition of trail? Snow? Required micro spikes or snowshoes? Bare? Muddy? How about condition of road to trailhead? Can regular small car navigate or does it now require SUV?

In all my years I've only gotten lost twice but that was my last two hikes!!! We got off trail and ended up bush whacking a bit over a mile. Due to the ice on top we didn't do the last traverse so thanks to the detour it turned out to be more of a hike. I kind of like bush whacking but prefer to do it on purpose, not cause I have to.

Bushwhacking wasn't fun while going through it, but anyway it was my first time. May be it will grow on me!

Was a few minutes late arriving at Gateway, sounds like I got there just after you left. Sorry I missed you guys and have a great hike!

One of the hikes I've been looking forward to too, but alas, I have to work.

If the weather holds good Saturday night and Sunday morning, I'm planning to spend overnight at McNeil.
