Phlox Point

Distance: 8.2 miles

Elevation Gain: 2200 feet

Difficulty: Moderate

No Discover Pass required - it is free because of MLK Jr. Day

Driving Distance: 80 miles roundtrip ($8 to the drivers)

We will start at the Equestrian trailhead off KupferRd. and follow the Hardy Ridge trail until we find the connector trail from Hardy West to Phlox Point. At the point we will eat lunch, weather permitting. Then we will look for this:

Boot Rock...and then cross Hardy Creek on this

Depending on what the group wants to do, we can extend the hike by climbing Hamilton Mtn or doing a little off trail. This will be a semi-exploratory hike for me.

Please bring the ten essentials including a head lamp. I do not intend to be hiking in the dark, but things can happen.

The 'ten essentials' to always have in your pack generally include: Map/compass (and advance understanding of where you're going!), sun protection, extra clothes, extra food, extra water, headlamp/flashlight (and spare batteries), first aid kit, matches/firestarter, knife/tools, and a whistle if you need to signal for help.  You should always be prepared in case you get separated from the rest of the group and/or have to spend a night on your own in the wilderness.

- As a Meetup organizer, I'm an unpaid volunteer.  While I always try to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone, by signing up for this event you assume full responsibility for your own health, safety, and well-being for its entire duration, including while traveling to and from both the meeting place and destination.

I like to stop for refreshments after hiking so if you need to be back at a certain time, please either drive yourself or do not sign up.

The weather was cold and very windy, but we had a great hike and excellent views from Phlox Point when we finally found it. Thanks to Barbara for leading it!

The first go round, we did not make it to Phylox Point. We saw the boot and the bridge but I erroneously went down the trail instead of making a left turn at the Hardy Trail sign. Eventually, some of us found the Phlox Point trail and it had great views. However, it was windy and sometimes the wind was cold although the sun was out. Thanks to everybody who survived the exploratory part and those who humored me by allowing me to find the eponymous trail.

A beautiful windy day in the gorge! Great hiking companions, and so glad I can cross the boot off of my bucket list! Thanks Barbara

From Tanner Butte viewpoint on Sunday, Barb and I were able to determine there was no snow on Phlox Pt.

I would love to do this but for some insane reason my kid's school has off that day.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
