Elk-Kings Mountain Loop Hike

Start point:  Elk Creek Trailhead

End Point:  Elk Creek Trailhead

Distance: 10.8 miles (rugged)

Starting Elevation: 700 ft.

Maximum Elevation: 3200 ft.

Total Elevation Gain: About 3700 ft.

Difficulty Level: Strenuous

This is a challenging hike in the coast range that will test endurance levels. There are a couple spots where using rope is almost a must (they are usually there, but I will bring some just in case). There is a good description of the hike here. Everyone must carry the ten essentials (lots of water). Please consider this to be an all day event. I've decided against camping, but don't let that stop those of you who are still interested. Sorry, this hike is not suitable for dogs.

What to Bring (more if camping):

-Good hiking shoes or boots

-Extra Layers in case of weather change/including rain gear

-Hat/gloves/extra socks/liners

-Trekking poles highly recommended

-Strongly advice extra food & water (three liters)

-First Aid Kit

-Camera

-Map & Compass / GPS / SPOT

-Emergency Shelter

-Flashlight/Headlamp with EXTRA Bulb/Batteries

-Pocket Knife and repair kit

-Waterproof Matches and Fire Starter

-Whistle and Metal Mirror

-Bug repellent/sunblock/hat/sunglasses

I'm not familiar with the park N ride @ Quatama. Will the non-drivers have any parking spaces left for their cars @ 9 am?

I don't think it will be full. I live right down the road, and there always seems to be empty parking spots.

Has it been decided yet whether this is a day hike, or overnight camp, which I know there was some talk of? If it's the latter, I will have to bail. But if it's a day hike, I'm in!

I have decided not to camp, so it will be a day hike...

This is the weekend of the Mount Adams climb. The climb leader told me yesterday that I was added to their roster, so I'll be dropping out of this one to make room for someone else. Sorry. Have fun, and I look forward to seeing you all on future hikes and climbs!

I have a vehicle, room for 4 (including myself), if you don't mind being slightly uncomfortable.
