End of Time Snowshoe Trek in the White River Canyon

Who wants to have a fun day in the snow on Friday, Dec. 21st?  For those that believe this to be the last day of earth, then I'm willing to have a great time with you.

Mileage for this trek is 3 miles out and back.  How much of that we actually do will depend on the group, but plan on being on the mountain for more than a couple of hours.  We should be back in Portland no later than 6pm.  We'll just go with the flow of the group and how everyone feels.

If the group wants to, we can stop at the Sky Bar on the way back for something hot to drink and good food to eat.

What to bring:

- Snowshoes (we will not stop to rent snowshoes so please come prepared)

- Rain gear (or snow pants and a rain jacket)

- One or two extra warm layers

- Hat, Gloves (2 pair of gloves)

- Waterproof boots

- Gaiters to keep snow out of your boots.

- Trekking poles

- Camera

- Something to sit on

- 2-3 liters of water, hiking snacks, ten essentials, non cotton clothing, sun screen.

- Drivers will need a Sno*Park permit before we head out.  We will probably need 3  vehicles.  I can fit 4-5 additional people in my vehicle.  Total driving distance to white River is 70 miles.  Traction Tires or Snow Chains may be required.

If you need transportation to White River Trailhead, we will be leaving from the Gateway Transit Center no later that 8:00am. If you tend to be late, then plan for 7:45am.

Gateway Park & Ride Transit Garage:

I-84 east to Exit 7 Halsey St.; take an immediate right on the exit on NE 99th Ave. Parking structure is second building on the right; go to the south end of the building to enter. From I-205 take Exit 21A Glisan St. from either north or south. Proceed to east side of freeway and turn left at the stoplight for NE 99th Ave. Continue past the Park & Ride surface lot to the parking structure. Meet in the southeast corner of the garage.

Meeting at the trail head is a second option.
Suggested donation of 7-10 dollars to carpool drivers.
If you have any questions, please message me, I am looking forward to hosting and leading this exciting trek.

PARTICIPATE AT YOUR OWN RISK; Northwest Wilderness Group organizers are volunteers. We come prepared to lead you on a trail or off trail hike but assume no liability for your safety getting to or from the trailhead or on the hike. In case of accident, illness, or other incapacity, hikers must pay for their own medical and/or evacuation expenses, whether or not the hiker has specifically authorized them.

After last week's snow storm, it was a beautiful scenery, and we had LOTS of heavy/deep snow to challenge us in spots. Great day to be on the mountain with a great group of people. Since I'm writing a review on this hike, we made it thru the "end of time". Phew, I was really concerned about that....lol Thanks Robert for your leadership skills!

How was the snow? How difficult was it to walk in the powder?

It follows the time zones. At midnight, each time zone will be destroyed by catastrophes, right up to its boundaries. Except for Arizona, which doesn't observe daylight savings time.

I'm pretty sure my version is correct because I saw it in a movie.

Hey Keith, do you know what time the world ends? Is it Dec. 21 USA time or will the Australians beat us to it?

I am available to drive and would like to get back a bit early for the end of the world festivities. Will have to stop for 10 minutes to chain up. Can take 2 or 3 more.

    So far we have:

Marc, who can take 3 more people.

Christine, who can take 1 - 2 additional people if they don't mind riding with a dog.

And myself, who can take along 4-5 additional people and gear.

Are dogs permitted on this trip?

Thanks, Robert. I have a car with snow tires and plan to purchase a sno park pass this week. (In other words, I am happy to drive!).
