MAY CAMPING TRIP TO KETTLE MORAINE SOUTH

A visit to the Kettle Moraine State Forest reveals the natural beauty of the region. More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit making this facility a popular area for a wide variety of users. Visitors to the forest can camp in one of three family campgrounds, a horse riders camp or one of two group camps, hike, mountain bike, ride a horse, snowmobile or ski on the 160+ miles of trail, swim at one of two beaches, backpack to an overnight shelter on the Ice Age Trail, picnic, fish, hunt, or tour three historic cabin sites. There are also facilities for use by those with disabilities including a cabin in the campground and an accessible nature trail. Visit the Southern Unit, experience the beauty and take advantage of the diversity of facilities it has to offer.

We'll be staying in Pine Woods which is located in the Northern part of Kettle Moraine Southern Unit.

Here are the details:

2 nights

Friday, May 31th
Saturday, June 1st

Flat fee of $30 for this trip. Your fee includes:

- dinner on Friday and Saturday nights
- breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings
- firewood for the weekend
- miscellaneous camping expenses and equipment upkeep

The event is pre-pay for you to be able to RSVP YES. If you cannot attend, you must request a refund NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 24 7:00 PM. If you cancel after this time or are a no-show, you will lose your payment.

Food: Everyone should bring their own food for all snacks and lunches. Dinner on Friday and Saturday will be something along the lines of hot dogs, brats, burgers, and fajitas.  I will also be providing all the food items for breakfast like pancake mix, sausage, bacon and eggs.  I will send all final meal details in the pre-trip literature a few days in advance. Please feel free to bring any side dishes, condiments, etc you would like to eat with meals.

ALL beverages including coffee, juice and milk - alcohol and non-alcohol - are BYOB. Also, please bring a mess kit - a wash line will be set up.

Cars: We can have 25 cars at this group site. For carpoolers, please use the comment field to leave the following information:

- Whether you need a ride or can drive
- How many passengers you can take
- What city or neighborhood you will be leaving from on Friday
- What time you can leave on Friday

Individual cars also need a Wisconsin Vehicle sticker ($10 a night or $35 per year, your choice).

Attendance/Waiting List: I am limiting the trip to the first 35 to RSVP and pay.  We can have as many tents as we need at the site - in previous years it looked like a little village!  No waiting list is available for pre-pay events.

If you would like to join, and the event is full, please "Post a comment" on the Meetup description that says "Waitlist (# of people) - date, time".

Again, I ask the following:
1) This is an adult only event. Please no children/teens.
2) Pets are allowed.  Just indicate in your RSVP if you will be bringing a pet.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Thanks,

Melissa

Another great time with NW Burbs Camping Group! Loved the spacious campsite this time! Saturday night's Asian themed dinner was delicious, Melissa! As always, I had fun with both new and familiar camping buddies. Lots of laughs around the campfire. Thanks again to Melissa and Assistant organizers for all the great planning. Special Thanks to Zack for his "Interperative Tour" of the forest! : )

I will not be camping but live in the area and was wondering if people would like to meet for a long hike in the morning? Would be up for about 10 miles and there are some beautiful trails in the Kettle moraine forest. I'm thinking 9:00 am? Any ideas where to meet?

Today a 35-mile segment of the Ice Age Trail runs through the the Kettle Moraine State Forest—Southern Unit. The segment starts at the Pine Woods campground near Highway G, north of Eagle, south of Highways CI and C. It ends at Whitewater Lake east of Whitewater.

Recommended trip: Begin at the Pine Woods Campground at the northern edge of the forest and head south to the Scuppernong segment (5.8 miles long). This section of the trail meanders through hardwood forest with at least two spectacular viewing opportunities along the way. Walk up to Spy Glass Hill on the 0.3-mile spur trail to shelter #1 to see an incredible view of an outwash plain that was flattened by water as the glacier melted.

Be prepared for muddy, soggy grounds and thunderstorms. Bring tarps, rain gear, plastic bags, proper footwear, warm clothing end extra clothing, etc... Watch for lightning and falling trees. Most of all keep an eye on each other for Hypothermia and make sure you have fun!

    May 28, 2013

    • Melissa

I appreciate the caution, Jenn. I am thinking with the temps ranging from low 50's to upper 70's, we are not expecting issues like hypothermia. We have 3 ez-up shelters should it rain. We'll bring the waterproof Uno cards!!!

      May 28, 2013

    • Jim B

I'll bring another EZ up or 2. If I can help with anything else just let me know.

This is not only my first group camp event of this sort, but my first meet-up event, too! I'm pretty excited, but want to make sure I bring what I need w/o over packing. With meals provided, and only me to worry about, it changes my normal pack list. Any suggestions?

    May 27, 2013

I'm hoping I'll be able to make the next one. Too many commitments now for this weekend. Have tons of fun! I know you all will.

on the site there says there is one spot available but when I try to rsvp, I get a message saying the meetup is full. if there is a spot, I would love to go. if not I will look out for the next one.

    May 22, 2013

  • Rick

I will not be a +1, so I need to free up one space for someone else to go.
I am not sure how to facilitate the process so any suggestions are welcome.
I tried to get a refund, but the site says no refunds.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
