Pump up the tires and oil your chains!! It's time to peddle the Chicago lakefront. This has always been a favorite for me. October means cooler days which makes peddling more enjoyable.

We'll meet near McCormick Place and ride north to Montrose Beach (about an hour). At Montrose we'll walk the famous "Horse Shoe" pier. From there we'll head back south and stop at Navy Pier. We'll walk around the pier, have lunch, shop , etc.

The entire ride will be less than 20 miles. It's nearly all flat and not difficult. Please, only sign up if you are SURE you can peddle the distance. Wearing a helmet is recommended. The traffic on the bike trail gets very congested. Plan on bringing the following items.

Cable bike lock
Water bottle/snacks
Cell phone

It's recommended that you carry a spare tube or repair kit. Some of us will have air pumps so if you don't have one don't worry. Check your bikes out a few days before the ride so you don't have any surprises the morning of the trip. This is also a good time to inflate tires.

I'll email you of the exact meeting location a few days before the event. Try to carpool if you can (I know it's hard because everyone has a bike). I'll be leaving the Northwest suburbs and have room for 3 people and 3 bikes.

Hope to see you soon.

I think it was the high winds out of the northeast that did this trip in. With temps in the 50's and gusts up to 30 mph, I think we would of taken a beating! On top of that there were a few showers. And to think, just the day before it was absolutely beautiful.

Jim is cancelling the bike ride today due to the weather conditions - which include lake effect rain, colder temps and strong winds.

A former member doesn't say "Visitor's Center" on the building, only "Northerly Island" and "Chicago Park District" but it has two large Earth globes on either side of the entrance. Can't miss it.

    Hi Jim B.,

I often park free at the Northerly Island Visitor's Center, which is the same building that used to be the Meigs Field control tower. It's open 9am to dusk 7 days a week. To get there, simply exit 18th off LSD and keep heading east until you get to S. Lynn White Drive and hang a right. Follow Lynn White as it snakes south (you'll pass Charter One Pavillion on left and Burnham Yacht Club on right) until the street ends. On the left will be the visitor's center.
