June Camping Trip - Lake Michigan at Manistee - Free Soil, Michigan

LAKE MICHIGAN AT MANISTEE (HURON-MANISTEE NATIONAL FOREST) – FREE SOIL, MICHIGAN

Lake Michigan at Manistee Group Campground is located within the Lake Michigan Recreation Area on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Manistee in Free Soil, Michigan. The quiet seclusion of the hardwood forest of the campground is filled with trails for hiking and biking. The forest gives way to a beach at the shores of the Lake and a playground for younger campers.

Manistee County is the best area in the world for natural reproducing steelhead (rainbow trout) and the salmon fishing is superb with over 50 percent of the Michigan Master Angler Salmon caught there every year. The abundant woods and waters will create for you an exciting event 365 days a year. Let Manistee add some unique flavor to whatever outdoor activity you choose and we guarantee you will truly enjoy yourself anytime of the year.

Trip Description:
Because of the travel distance (5 hours from Chicago and 6 hours from the north or west suburbs), this trip is planned for three nights from Thursday, June 21 through Sunday, June 24.

Please note that the group campground sites are considered rustic and do no have shower facilities on-site. There are showers at the nearby family campground.  We also have 2 group portable showers.  The average highs and lows for this area in mid June are in the mid-70’s during the day, and down to the mid-50’s at night.

Wait List:

This trip has been opened up to 40 people. Please note the Automatic Wait List is NOT available for pre-pay events.  If the event is full, please post your desire to be on the wait list in the "Talk about this meetup".  If we have a large wait list, I may open the trip up to additional people.

Payment:
The cost per person for this event will be $35. Your fee includes:

- Group site fees

- Breakfast and Dinner on Friday and Saturday

- Firewood for the weekend

- Miscellaneous supplies and group equipment maintenance

This event is pre-pay for you to be able to RSVP YES. If your plans change and you need to cancel, you must request a refund NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, JUNE 14 AT 10:00 PM to receive a full refund. If you cancel after this time or are a no-show, you will lose your entire payment.

Food Arrangements:
Everyone should bring their own food for all lunches and snacks as well as dinner on Thursday and breakfast on Sunday. All breakfasts and dinners on Friday and Saturday are included in your fee. Complete details on meals will be sent to the group prior to the event. If you have any meal suggestions, you can email them to me. Although it is not required, if you are planning to bring something to share with the group, you may indicate this in your RSVP to minimize duplication. ALL beverages - alcohol and non-alcohol - is BYOB - this includes juice, water, and coffee!

Parking and Michigan State Park Vehicle Permits:
We can have only 5 cars at this group site. Anything over 5 requires additional fees.  I highly suggest carpooling, although there is nearby overflow parking. If you are willing to carpool, please use the "comment" field in the RSVP and indicate where you are leaving from and how many you can take along in your car.

Miscellaneous Reminders:
- Pets are allowed on this camping trip so please indicate in your RSVP if you will be bringing your dog
- Free Soil, MI is a 5 hour drive from Chicago and further from the north and west suburbs
- This is an adult only event. Please no children/teens.

I will be emailing final details about the group site, directions, and breakfast/dinner menu options during the week before the event. In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

- Melissa :-)

Someone left two teal-colored camp chairs at Manistee. I rescued them to bring to Wildcat bit didn't go....and brought to Kohler and no one claimed. So I'm posting for whoever is missing them. Please contact me at[masked] or [masked] (not thru Meetup or I won't see it.) Sorry for the delay.

Unfortunately, unecessary drama/power trips by certain women threatened an otherwise perfect trip. However, I continue to be grateful and amazed at Melissa and the other organizers for the work they do to make these campouts enjoyable. We had a blast!

    More Tent Time!

    June 13, 2012

  • Tim K

Hi, Birt, I've been interested in taking the trip on the Badger for years. An alternative that is faster is the ferry between Milwaukee and Muskegon.
However, I am not interested if you do a two-way trip. I believe you can do either as a one-way trip and bring the cost down that way, then just drive around the lake for your other leg.
BTW, if we do car pool, would you have room enough for me, my camping gear, and my telescope?

    June 11, 2012

  • Jeudi

    Woo-hop!!!!!

    June 1, 2012

Here's an adventure idea for the June camping trip in Manistee! Let's car pool and take a cruise across Lake Michican aboard the S.S. Badger. Leave Manitowoc at 2:00pm on Thursday, arrive in Ludington at 7:00pm that evening. Leave Ludington at 9:00am on Sunday morning, arrive in Maintowoc at 12:00noon. Here's the down side; it's too expensive for Tod and I to make the trip alone. If we can find 2 people to share the cost, it's only $165 each. Check it out: http://www.ssbadger.com/home.aspx
