September's Camping Trip - Peninsula State Park, Door County, WI

PENINSULA STATE PARK IN DOOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN

High bluffs and cobblestone shoreline, an 1860's lighthouse, a challenging 18-hole golf course, a professional summer theater, a sandy swimming beach, bike trails and a year-round Naturalist program make this 3,776-acre park extremely popular.

Peninsula State Park

9462 Shore Road

Fish Creek, WI[masked]

[masked]

This park is located in the middle of historic Door County. From Green Bay take Hwy 42/57 North. Once north of Sturgeon Bay remain on Hwy 42 North to Fish Creek. The park is located approximately 1 mile from the village limits. Turn left at the large entrance sign.

This trip is planned for three nights: Thursday, September 13, Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15 and departing on Sunday, September 16.

It will be open to 30 people since we have a large open campsite.  You are welcome to join for any length of stay, but please note that since the park is 5 hours from Chicago, to make the most of your weekend, I encourage you to try to arrive on Thursday.

Payment: The cost per person for this event will be $38. Your fee includes:

- Group site fees

- Dinner for Friday and Saturday

- Breakfast for Friday and Saturday

- Firewood for the weekend

- Miscellaneous camping equipment

- Paypal fees

Cancellation Policy: This event is pre-pay in order for you to RSVP YES. If your plans change and you must cancel, you must request a refund NO LATER THAN MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 AT 7:00 PM to receive a full refund. If you cancel after this time or are a no-show, you will lose your entire payment. This group camps rain or shine so weather is not considered grounds for a refund. Please note that the automatic Waitlist does not work for pre-pay events, so please add your wish to be on the waitlist to the Meetup comments.

Food Arrangements: Everyone should bring their own food for all snacks and lunches. Breakfast on Friday and Saturday and dinner on Friday and Saturday are included in your fee. Besides all snacks and lunches, you will be on your own for dinner on Thursday and breakfast on Sunday.  We will take turns volunteering to help with all prep, cooking, and cleaning responsibilities for all meals. ALL beverages - alcohol and non-alcohol, including coffee, milk and juices - are BYOB.

In keeping with our new environmentally responsible policy, all campers are responsible for their own mess kit – including napkins. These items will no longer be provided by the group. A wash-line and sanitation station will be set up after breakfast and dinner for campers use.

Parking and Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Permits: We should have ample space for parking, but I still suggest carpooling. If you are willing to carpool, please use the "comment" field in the RSVP and indicate where you are leaving from and how many you can take along in your car. In addition, individual cars also need a Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Sticker that can be purchased at the park ($10 a night or $35 per year, your choice). You can also buy them online: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/parks/fees/

Miscellaneous: We will plan to have 30 campers.  We have to be out by 3:00pm on Sunday, September 16. In addition, please note the following:

1) Feel free to bring a kayak or canoe as our site is located on the lake and affords a prime opportunity for water sports.

2) This is an adult only event. Please, no children under 18.

3) Pets are allowed. PLEASE INDICATE IN YOUR RSVP IF YOU ARE BRINGING A PET.

I will be emailing final details about the group site and finalized dinner menu options the Monday before the event. In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail any of the organizers with any questions.

As usual, I had a great time. I got to see lots of old friends, and made lots of new ones. Looking forward to the Devil's Lake weekend.

Great job by Janine & John, Janine & Terry, and Zak. There was a strange and rare complete absence of dogs this time though.

    September 17, 2012

  • Terry

The site is called "Lakeside" It is one of 3 group sites all in the same area of the park. The water conditions are very dependent on the weather conditions, so it's hard to say how safe the water, that will have to be your call. I'm bringing my kayak.

    September 14, 2012

  • karen

Do you know the site number yet, or did I miss it? Does anyone know what the water conditions are like? I have a 12ft kayak with no skirt and I don't want to bring it if it isn't safe water.

    September 13, 2012

    • Tim K

Hi, Karen, I'm with Janine at the park and responding for her. We're at Lakeshore Gorup site - all trip info is in e-mail provided a few days ago. Conditions for kayaking look great - I'm staring at calm waters and kayakers on a gorgeous day. Hope to see you later.

@ Miguel & Char, Both of you expressed an interest in Kayaking. Judy has offered to bring an extra kayak. John and I will bring an extra kayak also. So hopefully neither of you will have to rent.

    September 13, 2012

  • Rick

Please include Patty and myself for the fish boil, if you haven't already done so. Thanks, Birt.

    September 12, 2012

    • Tim K

Hi, Deborah - I was going to leave Thu, but I'm willing to consider Friday if I can carpool and split the driving and cost of gas. If this will work for you call me tomorrow between 8am and 10am. [masked]-6011. Leave a note, too, if possible. I live in Palatine. Tim K.

Hello future friends! I am bringing an extra mountain bike and am willing to share. Just try not to lose it , break it..., or yourselves ; ) . Also, am bringing a kayak. Also willing to share it. Anyone have a telescope? It should be a great sky for viewing.

    September 11, 2012

    • Tim K

Yup, I've been bringing my telescope every trip, and I plan to have it with me again. I haven't got a folding utility wagon yet though. If anyone has an extra one I could use for my telescope and other astronomy gear I'd appreciate it.

      September 11, 2012

    • Miguel

I'm also bringing my binoculars and tripod. Judy, you borrow my binoculars and I borrow your bike/kayak!!!

      September 12, 2012

  • Birt H.

I sent an email to the White Gull to give them a heads-up and I made reservations for the 17 people who have already responded. I expect that more people might want to join us, so I plan to stop at the White Gull on Thursday to turn in a final count. I will include everyone who sends me a reply by Wednesday night.

Since some people are already planning to go to the Shipwrecked Brew Pub, we could make this a dual event. I suggest we meet Janine and John at the Pub in Egg Harbor anytime after 6:00 for pre-dinner drinks and socializing, and then drive up to the White Gull in Fish Creek in time for the 8:15 seating.

    September 12, 2012

    • deborah w.

Hi Burt! What a great plan! I am trying to get up there Fri.

      September 12, 2012

    • deborah w.

I've never gone to the fish boil yet, it is on my wish list!

      September 12, 2012

  • Birt H.

I don't know how many of you have ever enjoyed a Door County fish boil at the White Gull Inn, but I've eaten there a number of times and I can highly recommend the event as a spectacular dining experience. Seatings are normally at 5:45, 7:00, and 8:15, and the cost of the dinner, including dessert, is $19.50. Since this camping trip does not include dinner on Friday night, Tod and I are planning to eat at the White Gull that evening. We will be arriving at the campsite on Thursday afternoon and I plan to stop on the way at Fish Creek to make our fish boil dinner reservation. If you would like to join us, send me a reply by Wednesday night because we will be leaving the Chicago area on Thursday morning. I propose reserving places at the 8:15 seating to acommodate people coming up on Friday who might not be able to make the drive in time for the earlier seatings.

    September 8, 2012

    • Beth

I mean add me to the fish boil list! Thanks Birt!

      September 11, 2012

    • Susan

Please add me to the list, too. Thanks!

      September 11, 2012

  • Janine W

Miguel, Probably 7ish pm. But John and I will probably stay at Shipwreck's for awhile as the brewmaster there is a friend and this is one of the few opportunities for us to visit and catch up. So if you are doing both I would suggest dinner at White Gull and enjoy that experience at whatever time Birt can get seating. And then stop in before or after for a beer at Shipwreck's. They have some interesting brews including a cherry wheat and a fall pumpkin beer. They have outdoor seating if the weather is nice. So you can have your cake and eat it too. Or in this case have your dinner and drink a beer! :)

    September 9, 2012

    • Tim K

...Birt to ask for a spot at the Fish Broil. Please delete my name for Shipwreck's reservations, but I hope to see you there after the Fish Broil.

      September 11, 2012

    • Miguel

Thanks Janine, I'll follow your advice and go to the fish boil. Before or after I'll stop by for the beer!

      September 11, 2012

  • Tim K

Aren't these things actually Fish *Broils*?

    September 11, 2012

    • Janine W

lol no it's fish boil, poached fish is very Scandinavian. The White Gull is one of the best restaurants up there I'm sure theirs is good.

    • john o.

hey Tim that was me replying, J9 was logged in on my computer, looking forward to seeing you!

      September 11, 2012

Birt, sign me up! Fish Boil sounds great, I'm coming up on friday morning and I can go to Shipwreck first or after dinner. Thanks

    September 11, 2012

  • Susan

Please include me in the reservation for the fish boil. Thanks!

    September 11, 2012

  • Char

Janine and Birt: I'm going to cancel going to Shipwreck's for dinner and attend the fish boil with Birt also. Please include me in the reservations. I hope to stop by for a beer afterwards.
    Thanks

    September 11, 2012

  • Ruth P.

Janine and or Birt: We would like to have dinner at the fish boil. Please make reservations for 2 for the 8:15 seating. Thank you Ruth

    September 10, 2012

  • Janine W

There is going to be a slight change. Instead of 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners. There will be 3 breakfasts and 1 dinner provided. The breakfast and dinner menus will emailed later. The reason for the change is Terry, Janine G., John & I are friends with Rich the brewmaster at Shipwreck's Brewpub and we would like to invite you all to join us for dinner there. Your food and drinks at Shipwrecked is extra and not included in the $38 fee. For those that do not wish to go, my grills will be available for you to use. I only ask that you clean them when you are done using them. I need to provide Shipwreck's with a head count, so if you RSVP to me thru meetup email, I would appreciate it. Thanks

    September 5, 2012

    • Janine W

      Probably Friday evening

      September 6, 2012

Janine: I'll have dinner at the fish boil. I'll probably stop by Shipwreck's for a beer before that. THX

      September 10, 2012

  • Tim K

I'm still looking for someone with whom to carpool. Anyone else looking to split the cost of gas and driving time?

    September 9, 2012

  • Miguel

Janine, at what time are you planning the dinner at Shipwreck's? I want to see if I can attend both Shipwreck's and White Gull Inn !

Thanks Terry. I guess I also should have asked if I should bring my mountain bike or my comfort bike? Are most of the trails doable with a hybrid comfort bike? The website says yes, but from experience, I would rather trust somebody that has biked there before.

      September 5, 2012

    • Terry

Tails are pretty easy, crushed limestone. Hybrid bike should be fine

Is there electricity at our campground? Thank you, anyone who knows : )

    September 5, 2012

  • Tim K

I'll be looking for someone with whom to carpool again, especially if there's enough room for me to bring my telescope and associated gear.

BTW, any tips where I can get one of those wagons? One would be very handy for my astronomy gear.

    August 20, 2012

  • Eunice Z.

I am planning on coming and should know by this weekend (Aug 10). I know the site is on the water but I fly fish and was wondering if you have info on were on the lake we might be So I can look into how close a good fishing spot might be for me? Also the area where we camp are there electric hook ups?

    August 7, 2012

  • Tim K

Gloria, in case it's not clear, this is actually a meetup group run by dogs. However, they do always bring us humans along. ;-)

Well behaved dogs are always welcome!! Our campsite is on the water so I leave it to you to decide about the boat.

    CARPOOL AND EQUIPMENT HAULING!
I will take my 1 ton chevy if there is a need. I have an 8 foot bed and can bring a trailer if there is a lot of equipment people want to bring. (kayaks, bicycles, etc) I can fit 4 people comfortably, 5 if 3 of ya squeeze in the back.
Otherwise I would love to carpool with someone else!

I would very much like to attend your camping event, but alas, I don't have any money. Perhaps I could catch some fresh fish for the group in lieu of cash?
