2013 First Hike of the Year-Herrick Lake

Time to start working on that New Years Resolution and enjoy the outdoors.

Whether by foot, bicycle, ski or horseback, you can explore Herrick Lake via several multipurpose trails that feature benches and numbered trail markers to guide you along the way. A path around the lake connects both parking lots to the picnic grounds and the trailhead, and additional trails cut through the central and southern parts of the preserve. In the winter, trails are groomed for classical and skate-style cross-country skiing when conditions permit. Link to information about Herrick and where you can print a map of preserve: http://www.dupageforest.com/Conservation/ForestPreserves/Herrick_Lake.html

We will start hiking by 2:10pm. We are going to do about 5-6miles. If you do have experience with this location we welcome your input.

The trail is level but may have snow and ice. Please bring/wear appropriate footwear (YakTrax) and dress in layers. Bring plenty of fluids and snacks.

Parking: The west parking lot is on the east side of Herrick Road 0.25 mi south of Butterfield Rd. We are using the Herrick Rd entrance. The entrance is on Herrick Rd which is west (1st traffic light) of the Main entrance and 200 yards south. From Naperville Rd and Butterfield Rd travel West on Butterfield to Herrick Rd. Turn L/South on Herrick Rd, travel approx 200 yards to parking lot on the left hand side. The lot has pit toilets not sure if the main entrance bathrooms will be open.

Great place to hike, a little cold would have liked the hike to start earlier as sunset occurs about 4:30 pm.
Without the sun it does get colder faster

Since so many people have dropped off the hike, if you are on the waiting list, please feel free to attend. I'll email attendees with my cell phone number and see you all there.

Since there is a number of people interested in this hike and the weather and hike conditions are not horrible I am opening up the attendance to 20 people.

There are many reasons why we limit the number of attendees for our events. In the winter we like to keep the groups smaller. We dont like to leave any man behind so we have a lead and a sweeper to make sure everyone is together and all okay.
