The NY Culture Circle! Pages

A Culture Circle is a group which meets on a regular basis in order to share, learn about, receive and participate in culture (eg. any human expression: art, music, photography, etc...).

This group takes its inspiration from the movie Dead Poets Society with the exception that, unlike the gathering depicted in the movie, the scope is expanded to include anything creative, not just poetry.

GROUP FORMAT: Everyone brings something creative (a poem, song, story, painting... ANYTHING). It can be either something they created or something they have found in the world.

We all take turns going around the circle and each person has the chance to share his/her offering. Eg. they could play the song on guitar, show the picture, play the CD, tell about the movie, etc...

He/she has the opportunity to express why that cultural treasure is meaningful to him/her, and then everyone else in the group has the opportunity to give their reaction as well.

Everyone gets a turn-- by the end of the night, everyone has been a giver and receiver of culture.

A major premise of this group is that WE ALL HAVE A CREATIVE SIDE.

Everyone has something to share that is uniquely theirs, that people can't get from anywhere else. The point of this group is to create a safe place where we can feel comfortable giving and receiving creative ideas.

When a Culture Circle comes together in a spirit of earnest sharing, new discoveries are made, meanings are explored, inspiration flows, and the wheels of cultural transmission are greased....
