14th NY Hardware Startup Meetup

Don't forget to add your email to your RSVP - NYC Alley requires it

Hey hardwarians! Time for another meetup, and boy have we got a treat for you guys. We're finalizing details, but we're doing another collab with the fine folks at MakeIt NYC! The current agenda is:

7:00 - 7:30: Arrival, pizza and beer

7:30 - 7:50: Marc Barros – Contour
Marc Barros is a co-founder and former CEO of Contour, a hands-free camera company that makes action video easy to capture and share. Shortly after graduating from the University of Washington, Marc co-founded Contour in 2004 and led the organization from a garage to a multi-million dollar company with hundreds of thousands of customers around the world. Marc has a tremendous amount of wisdom to share about going from the garage to the real world, a definite don't-miss presentation. He also has one of the best blogs for hardware startups that I've ever read. @marcbarros

7:50 - 8:05: Amanda Bensol and Robert Schouwenburg - Karma

Amanda is Bizdev & Ops and Robert Schouwenburg is COO for Karma (and former CTO of Shapeways) - an amazingly innovative new take on WiFi/hotspot sharing. In short, the Karma 4G mobile hotspot not only provides you with bandwidth on the go, but you get a bandwidth credit for letting folks around you securely piggy-back on your device. Yup, they allow you to turn leeching into free bandwidth! @abensol

8:05 - 8:25: Ryan Vinyard - Lime Lab/Highway1

Ryan's presentation is called "Packaging For Startups". Ryan will be discussing packaging as an extension of UX, branding vs. logistics, and how to use tricks like... underwear shaped bar codes? No seriously, that's in there, as is a whole bunch of ideas, pointers and experience in one very efficient package. We're thrilled to have Ryan join us and get into an important part of the hardware equation that's often overlooked.

8:25 - 8:40: George Wolberg, Pageflip Firefly

For the musicians in the house, George Wolberg has something awesome for you - the PageFlip Firefly, which just completed a successful Kickstarter campaign. The PageFlip Firefly lets you use a wireless, Bluetooth device to "flip the pages" of electronic sheet music on your tablet. In short, it let's you use pedals to communicate with anything that can see a Bluetooth HID keyboard (assuming, of course, that the software on the receiving end understands the "keypresses")

    Hi all,

We're a team of students who just graduated from UPenn, we built a wearable device that tracks if you're getting drowsy and helps you stay alert! We just launched on Kickstarter this morning, check it out at this link and help support us to make Vigo a reality! We were pitching on the West Coast last week so we couldn't make it to the last meetup, hope to see you all at a future event!

Excellent Meetup, great presenters, looking forward to the next one. As a side note - just reaching out to the hardware start ups....I am a local semiconductor rep, please let me know how I can help with your current designs (technical questions, samples, eval boards, pricing, etc). Here's a quick list of manufacturers I rep (CSR, Silicon Labs/Energy Micro, Bluegiga, Invensense, Intersil, Littelfuse, ON Semi, SanDisk, Telit, Vicor). Let me know how I can help!

Excellent presenters, as always. Love the talent and enthusiasm in this group. Glad we touched on packaging and branding, too. Great product ideas need a designer to do the (right-brained) things that science doesn't. My focus happens to be branding, UI/UX, packaging and industrial design, and I'm looking for companies at that stage. I'm a senior software UI designer at SAP, owner of Hotiron Creative and former creative director at Autonomic, a manufacturer in the home automation and high-end audio space. You can reach me at [masked]. Cheers!
