Hello hardwarians,
For those of you who came out last Thursday, I hope you'll agree that it was a truly awesome meetup. We had the privilege of great presenters, and excellent company with the Make It NYC folks. And wasn't that the best pizza we've had? eBay really went all out. Just as a follow up, here are some notes about the speakers as well as some other announcements:
1) The R/GA Accelerator program is looking for the next big connected device startup and is accepting entries until October 11th. If you're selected you'll be incubated at R/GA's amazing office space in midtown and you'll enjoy a pretty impressive mentor list.
2) MakeSimply, a company that helps startups get their products manufactured (and wonderful sponsors to our meetup), launched their education program MakeSimply X Education, which includes workshops on manufacturing and hardware product development. For their first workshop, Machining Techniques, they are giving meetup members $20 off with discount code HWM13SEPT. Sign up here for the workshop!
3) Valery Komissarova from Grishin Robotics talked about how they want to fund consumer robotics, with a focus on design and user experience (but no humanoid robots!). They haven't made an investment in NY yet, so for those of you working on robotics and looking for funding, make sure you look them up!
4) Bunnie Huang told us of some of the complexities around getting your consumer electronic product into retail, by explaining his experience at Chumby. Jeff McAlvay spoke about Tempo Automation, a desktop robot that can produce printed circuit boards. He mentioned he organizes a meetup called "Factory Tours" in the bay area - I would LOVE to have something like that over in NY. If anyone wants to organize it, let me know! Laen spoke about his maker journey, which led to the end of his career and the beginning of OSHPark and their purple boards. And finally, we had David Lang exhorting us all to be ocean explorers, and telling us about OpenROV.
5) The Design for Manufacturing Forum will be happening in Dumbo, Brooklyn this Thursday September 26th. Want 50% off the price? Here you have it!
6) We have some hardware meetup members in the midst of crowdfunding campaigns, so go support them or spread some social media love. We have Run 'n Read, who are making a device that can track your eyes as you run on a treadmill and move the text on your tablet accordingly. Also, we have Easy Fork, a newly designed fork for folks with arthritic problems to eat more comfortable.
Thanks again and have a great week!
Haytham
