In association with the Police Reform Organization Project, I am forming a Peaceful Streets Project NYC: Cop Watch Team. We will be going out in teams into high stop and frisk areas to film police encounters with the community. The purpose of these teams is not to agitate police, but to provide backup to the community.
The presence of cop watch teams will:
1. Encourage police to act professionally.
2. Train the community to know and stand up for their rights in a peaceful and non aggressive way.
3. Provide evidence in the event of police abuse
Cop Watch teams WILL NOT:
1. Harass Police
2. Agitate during stops creating a high anxiety atmosphere that could lead to police violence.
The purpose is to change the culture from one of fear of the police, to empowerment where the community and police can work together to keep crime out of these neighborhoods, via holding police accountable, rather than submitting to violent, and unjust policing practices.
If you are interested in joining the Peaceful Streets Project please attend this meeting. There are also other ways to get involved such as petitioning against Stop and Frisk for P.R.O.P.
this is a great idea - thanks for coming up with it. I'll have to see if I am free tomorrow. I am going to forward this to a friend of mine.
