Beginner Hike - Rockefeller Preserve

Rockefeller Preserve Beginner Hike

11:00am

"At Pocantico Hills...where the fine views invite the soul...I have spent many delightful hours, studying the beautiful views, the trees and fine landscape effects of that very interesting section of the Hudson River..." Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Sr. Random Reminiscences - 1908  (Photo, Tiffany Black)

Contact: Feel free to post a question to the site or send me an email.  I'll send out a group email with my cell number 24 hours ahead of the hike so you can contact me for cancellations and directions.

Terrain: Easy to moderate, mainly rolling hills.

Distance: Something about an hour and a half. Approximately 4 miles.

Pace: Moderate to brisk. Although this is a beginner hike, and nobody gets left behind, we walk at a very brisk pace! Please assess your ability to keep this pace before signing up.

Meeting location: We will meet at the the MAIN Parking lot for the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.
The Parking lot is located on the south side of Route 117 approximately halfway between Route 9A to the East and Route 9 to the West. There are gates and stone walls at the entrance, a large horse-trailer parking lot, a little toll booth, a visitors center and a bathroom building

Cancellation notices: I will cancel by 10:00am if the weather looks dicey or if the hiking conditions are not great.

Pets: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome. The park requires dogs to be leashed at all times.  It is possible that we will encounter one or more horses with riders or carriages.

Hike Description: The usual...

Dave, Thanks for the heads up about the difficult conditions for tomorrow's hike. Since I don't have any traction devices, it's probably best that I stay away from these trails for now. Have fun. Dave H.

WOuld have enjoyed seeing everyone but with no traction devices, I'll take Dave's advice and pass. Have a great hike, see you all soon.

Since I am new to this group and do not have winter equipment, I will need to take a pass. Hopefully the winter conditions aren't as bad as suggested.

Don't want to deal with the ice. I'll wait for a warm up.

Crampons are not needed. The trails that are utilized for vehicle traffic are snow free and the outer trails are packed down. Never hurts to have microspikes in your pack but microspikes are not a requirement for the 18th.

Got email from Dave, I don't think I will be able to handle it as a first time beginner. And thank you Philip for offering me a ride. Hope everyone have a great time tomorrow.
