Volunteer Orientation at Pets Alive Shelter - Then Hike Graham Hills Co. Park

Each Saturday Pets Alive Westchester Animal Shelter holds an orientation for new volunteers.  The orientation lasts about an hour...join me. After that we'll spend some time hanging with or walking the pups.

Afterwards, head to nearby Graham Hills Country Park for a fairly brisk 2 - 3  hour hike (Lots of hills...the pace will be moderate+, at least for me.)  We will stop to socialize though, but the hills will get your heart pumping.

Feel free to join me at the orientation, OR just come for the hike at Graham Hills (which will start approx. 12:30.)

Sadly, I doubt any of the shelter dogs will be permitted to join us on the Graham Hills Hike, but this is obviously a dog-friendly hike.

To reach the animal shelter, take route 9A north from 119 till you see Sam's Club. Turn left (west) and follow the signs.

Please Note: the Orientation starts at 10 AM, but it fills up quickly.  I listed this event last week (with a different group) and when we arrived at 9:50, the room was already filled (capacity 40) and they turned us away.   So I'm suggesting you arrive at 9 to make sure you get in.

Graham Hills Country Park is on route 117, accross from Pace Univ. in Pleasantville.  From the shelter, return to 9A, head north and exit at 117.  Turn right and see the entrance to the park in a few hundred yards on the right.

Hope to see you there!

There is no fee for this event. You attend at your own risk. Hiking and/or hanging out with dogs (shelter or otherwise) can be dangerous!!! We are not professionals and we can't promise that you will be safe!

Event worked out very well....the Orientation was interesting, the dogs beautiful, and I actually saw some of our members out walking the dogs. The hike was terrrific...the snow was not that deep, soft and mushy, so in some places it was a bit of a slow go, but almost no ice. Thanks for all who came. (BTW...two people showed up for the hike that I'd like to identify...I don't see their RSVPs and i can't find them in the members list. They are Bill and Danielle. If you know them, or if are Bill or Danielle, please email me a link to your member profile so I can add you to the RSVP list. Thanks.)

No feeling well (a little under the weather), and so I need to cancel. Hopefully someone can take my spot (should be a good hike).

I was wondering with the snow if the hike is still on? Is the hike in the woods and what type of shoes do I need. Not sure if I can attend the orientation can I arrive to walk the dogs and then go on the hike. I will not be able to volunteer at this location because it is far from the house. I would love to help walking a dog. I have a golden which will stay home.

Linda, the hike is on, as indicated. Weather is supposed to be nice. A pair of over-the ankle boots would seem a minimum, preferably waterproof...leather or goretex. A pair of gaiters too, or snow pants will help. If you are the indestructible type and don't mind wet, cold feet for a couple of hours, well, you could probably do this in just an ordinary pair of low hiking shoes and stay in the tracks of others. If you are not a hearty winter hiker, this is probably not for you. As for walking the dogs, the shelter has told me that in order to walk their dogs, you have to have taken the orientation (and signed their release forms.) And they will not even let you sign the forms if you don't take the orientation (I tried two weeks ago.) Hope this helps.

Hey People....The hike will start at 12:30. Don't know what the conditions will be like....the snow near me (and I live close to the park) is about 6 inches deep, wet and heavy. Unless we get some serious freezing temps tonight, there should not be a lot of ice by noon tomorrow...but you never know. It never hurts to bring traction aides (Although in the conditions I expect, I think poles will be more useful.) Keep in mind that Graham Hills is hilly. And the trails are rough....Rockefeller Preserve it's not. Bring some water...the hike may be short but you'll probably want a drink. And a snack.
    Note:
If you get closed out of the Orientation, you could head over to the Park early and do a mini loop or wander around the isles of nearby Sam's Club (you don't need to be a member to enter, just to buy anything) and marvel at the size of the packaging.

Sorry that I won't be able to make it. My dog is actually currently very sick and I need to take care of him first.

Also, please, if you are not coming...change your RSVP so we won't be expecting you for the hike.

Friday, 1:10 PM....Just confirmed with Pets Alive that the Orientation is on for tomorrow. It starts at 10 AM, but again, get there early to be sure to get a spot. The guy I spoke to did not think the doors would be open before 9:30...so certainly get there before that! The hike will be on no matter what. I'll send an email later with a bit more info on that.

There are a few particpants who must have RSVP'd through a smart phone and did not answer the questions that come up when you RSVP yes. If you did not see these questions (in which you acknowledge our liability policy), please RSVP again and respond appropriately. Thanks.
