Race Brook Falls MA to Bear Mtn CT - Strenuous

  • November 9, 2013 · 9:30 AM

I chose this because there is a section of this hike on the AT that is new to me.   By going from north to south we also open up a chance to Rock scramble.

This hike is somewhere between 9 and 10 miles.  (There is an option to add in a bit more if we want to include one more viewpoint.)

This hike is for experienced hikers in very good physical condition with no injuries who are completely competent to do this hike at a pace between 2 and 2.5 mph.

We will be hiking in the Mt Washington State Forest and Mt Everett Reservation in MA and the Mt Riga State Park in CT.  We will hike the Appalachian Trail from north to south from the Race Brook Falls apprioach to Bear Mtn in Salisbury CT. After Bear Mtn we will pick up the Under Mountain Trail heading east to the ending trailhead.

This will be a 10+- mile strenuous through hike.  The trails are mainly single file hiking trails with several challenging sections with steep climbs and descents. We will start the hike with a 1,635 foot climb to the view from Mount Race taking in the multiple cascades of the 300 foot plus Race Brook Falls. We enjoy a respite while we ridge walk over to Bear Rock Falls, another several hundred foot series of waterfalls and cascades. From there we descend to Sages Ravine and take in the beauty of the ancient old growth Hemlock forest and babbling brook with dramatic boulders and steep walled gorges and a series of ever more secluded pools and cataracts as we ascend the ravine. When we leave the brook we will make our final strenuous ascent and rock scramble up the north side of Bear Mtn and take a nice long brake before our 3+ mile descent to the parking lot.

Meet and be ready to leave for the starting trailhead at 9AM sharp from the parking area. Folks, this means arrive early enough to give yourself the time you need to get your gear together and be ready to leave by 9AM not arrive at 9AM.

This will involve a short car shuttle up route 41 to the start point.

If there is interest, I can look into potential carpool options from either Westchester, Putnam or CT.

$1.00 fee for this event

While I love dogs, I am not allowing dogs on this hike since we will be going single file in spots.

Note:  You are making an all day commitment if you sign on for this hike.

Trailhead GPS coordinates: 42.029814 -73.428842

Access: Car Parking is on route 41 (under mountain road), 3.5 miles north of routes 41/44 junction. A blue oval sign marks the parking area along the road.

If there is interest, I can look into potential carpool options from either Westchester, Putnam or CT.

Rain or high threat of rain will cancel.

I will update with additional details as we get closer to the date.

Ten stars! First cold day on the Taconic Range... Thank you everyone for the trail expertise, the company, the laughs and ... the cultural updates. We saw it all..from the waterfall (this time with plenty of water...) to the Twin Lakes, the ridge, the scramble etc... What a great day! and a pleasant apres-hike dinner at a local restaurant with live entertainment! Thank you for driving, Steve!! PS. Did you know that the word Taconic comes from the native American "Taghkanic or Taughannock", meaning "in the trees"? :)

Carpool Location - Between 8AM and 8:15AM - I'd like to be on move by 8:15

1620 Route 22 Brewster NY - this is the intersection of 312/22 - same complex that has McDonalds and the Brewster Cinema - About a 75 minute drive from here to lot for Bear Mtn CT We typically park in middle of lot - closer to the bagel place

Will likely carpool from 684 -exit 4 and then Route 22 in Brewster -McDonald's/Brewster Cinema. Open to post hike dining options as not familar with much on the Salisbury side. I know Millbrook is an option but Millbrook tends to be crowded and pricey. Taconic Wayside Inn is 20-25 minutes (estimating) in wrong direction.

Will have carpool times up by end of week - Guessing either 8 or 8:15 in Brewster

Pam, I am sure Steve we'll organize a meeting point for all of us. I am already part of the 684 carpooling...wherever they decide to meet.

Since we are a small group. can move this back a bit if that makes things easier. As long as we in theory start on trail by 10AM we should be ok. The time for the car shuttle is not that long and it is on the same road
