Ward Pound Ridge - Intermediate Hike

  • Apr 13, 2014 · 9:00 AM

Even with the early start, this is traditionally one of our more popular hikes. The plan is to start at 9:05 and finish somewhere between 12 and 12:30 - I may mix this up a bit and throw in one or two new twists.

Estimated distance - Between 5 and 6 miles - with the potential for a few moderate hills. If we skip the moderate hills the distance will be in the 7's.

This is not a beginner hike as there are some moderate hills here and we will move at a consistant pace.

Footwear - Always recommend hiking boots but you can get away with comfortable sneakers. I'd still bring a change of shoes for your ride home as some of the low lying areas could be muddy. No Crocs

Suggested Donation - $1.00

Start time - We are starting by 9:05 so please keep that in mind if you are directionally challenged or require additional prep time.

Well behaved pets are welcome - I will ask you to either stay toward the front or the back of the group. Dogs should be leeshed and there is a place for them to dunk.

Trailhead GPS Coordinates[masked],[masked] Note: We are not starting at Michigan Road so please pay attention to the directions below. Weather - Rain cancels - If weather is iffy, I will make a call by Saturday night

Driving Directions

From the George Washington Bridge, proceed north on the Henry Hudson Parkway, which becomes the Saw Mill River Parkway. Take Exit 4 and proceed east on the Cross County Parkway. In about three miles, bear left to continue on the Hutchinson River Parkway north. After about eight miles, bear left to continue on Interstate Route 684. Take Exit 6 (Cross River), which briefly joins the Saw Mill River Parkway, then exits to N.Y. Route 35. Turn right and follow Route 35 east for 3.7 miles to N.Y. Route 121. Turn right onto Route 121, cross a bridge over the Cross River, then immediately turn left and enter Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Continue for 0.7 mile to the tollbooth (a parking fee is charged on weekends, daily in the summer). Proceed for 1.3 miles beyond the tollbooth and turn left into the Kimberly Bridge parking area.

A little more challenging than I'm accustomed to, but the trail Steve selected was beautiful, as usual, and well worth the effort. To my "consternation," I noted that Lockey (sp?) the rat terrier handled it like a champ and totally put me to shame! I guess I'd better start hitting the gym again!
