Croton Bicycle Ride for Wide Tire Bikes (Hybrids or wider).multi meetup event

  • June 7 · 12:00 PM

This is not a bike ride about speed or distance. It is about riding on one of the most scenic paths around.  We will travel at a moderate pace, stopping for a few views and a snack. Although less than 20 miles, it is not all level and most of this ride is on dirt, so you will get some cardio. This is not a rail trail ride  it is not a ride for novice bikers. To my knowledge this bike ride is not published, it is something I put together over ten years ago.

This is a joint meetup event with Westchester Social Cyclists and NY Outdoors & More. Join us on one of Westchester's most scenic bike rides. The ride starts with a trip over the very old "Gate House Bridge", that crosses the New Croton Reservoir. We will then travel along the shores of the reservoir on a mostly dirt road. This road has extremely light road traffic (used mostly by fisherman). We will bike to and accross the Croton Gorge Dam and then down to the base of the spillway. Upon leaving the Croton Dam Plaza, we will ascend part way up to the care takers road and take that for a short way. We will then take a trail up to the OCA (Old Corton Aqueduct Path). Most will walk their bikes up part of the way. We will then bike on the level dirt OCA for a few miles, until we get a view of the Hudson. We will return on the OCA to the dam access road. We will finish the trip up to the top of the dam and then back to our starting point. Fiqure 3 hours, bring a snack, h2o, a bike lock/cable it you have one and of course a helmet. Mountain bikes are not needed, however it is not a good idea to attempt this ride with "very narrow tired" touring bikes.
