Rockefeller Preserve
Hike

Beginner Terrain • Intermediate (Fast) Pace

4:45pm - (No Parking Fee after 4:30pm)

Photos bt Tiffany Black

** Post hike social - this is an opportunity to do some socializing. We select a pub atmosphere where you can come for a drink or a bite to eat.  A pub menu as this is the most accomidating to the general public (limeted vegatarian is available).

"At Pocantico Hills...where the fine views invite the soul...I have spent many delightful hours, studying the beautiful views, the trees and fine landscape effects of that very interesting section of the Hudson River..." Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Sr. Random Reminiscences - 1908 (Photo, Tiffany Black)

Contact: Feel free to post a question to the site or send me an email.  You may also call me:

Post hike social: At one point, I will need to know if you are going out to eat or have a drink with us. We have to call in a reservation beforehand.

Terrain: Easy to moderate carriage trails on rolling hills.

Distance/Time Options:  After, 1  1/4 hrs group often splits into 2 groups (Weather often plays a big part on how the group splits up.):

1  1/2hr/4-5 mile earlier out group

or

2 hr/6-7 mile later out  group.

Both groups eat/drink together.

Pace: Moderate to brisk. Although this is a beginner hike, and nobody gets left behind, we walk at a very brisk pace! Please assess your ability to keep this pace before signing up.

Meeting location: We will meet at the the MAIN Parking lot for the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.

The Parking lot is located on the south side of Route 117 approximately halfway between Route 9A to the East and Route 9 to the West. There are gates and stone walls at the entrance, a large horse-trailer parking lot, a little toll booth, a visitors center and a bathroom building.

Meet on the benches near the restroom.

Latitude:[masked] Longitude: [masked]

GPS Address: 125 Phelps Way, Pleasantville, NY  10570

Cancellation notices: I will cancel by 3:00pm if the weather looks dicey or if the hiking conditions are not great.

If your plans change, please be sure to change your RSVP to NO on the hike page. Leaving a comment won't free up a spot on the list. Thanks!

Pets: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome. The park requires dogs to be leashed at all times.  It is possible that we will encounter one or more horses with riders or carriages.

HIKING GUIDELINES FOR EARLY OUTS AND GETTING SEPARATED. If at anytime you need for us to make a necessary stop, the leader will accommodate you. lso, if for any reason you need to bail out early, the leader will tell you the quickest and easiest way out. It is everybody's responsibility to make sure they are in eyesight of the group. Do not assume you know the route we are taking, leaders often alter the route. If you get left behind because you are picking berries, taking photographs, or looking for UFO's that was your decision and the group should not have to pay for your decision, in those cases you are on your own.  Always keep your cell phone with you and the group leaders phone number.  If lost or separated, you should call him for assistance and to check in.

I'll chime in even though it was my first hike with this group. I thought the hike was great, the pace was perfect, and the hills were great as well. And a really nice group of people. Thanks Ted!

Hi Ted, I actually thought the hike was great...a bit of a challenge, but certainly nothing outrageous, and definitely noted in description.

  • Susan S

Thanks Ted. It was a great first hike for me, but I agree that the last hill was a real challenge.

FYI - HILLS - Some people felt this hike was hillier than most. Actually the elevation gain was no different than most of our recent hikes. The reason it may have felt hillier was that the last long incline we took, after crossing Sleepy Hollow Road, is perhaps "the steepest incline" in the park.

Reposting comment left on last week's meetup board for weekly Rockefeller St. Pk. hike to give others a chance to see it if interested. Hope that's OK.
    -----------------------------------------------------
Ted, as you saw I did not catch up with the group............ As I was leaving the parking lot, I asked a woman walking for some help in remembering how to get to Eagle Hill. Turns out she is the Park Manager. Very nice, .......helped me out. Learned a little, enjoyed her company for a short way and she told me about some of the work they are doing and their need for volunteers. ------- As an example she mentioned a plant that spreads quickly that is toxic to the wildlife that they are trying to control. I thought I'd mention this to you and the group for any who are interested in learning more and/or helping. Her name is Susan Antenen , tel. is (914)[masked] ext. 101 or email is [masked] for any interested as individuals or as a group activity.

This will probably be the last week at the River Grill Roof Patio. Sunsets are coming to early for us and it is starting to get chilly in the evenings. Hopefully, after Labor Day, we will return to the Bridgeview or elsewhere.

Different start time is just for this Tueday. As trying to meet us on the trail, that is hard. Temp, humidity, sun all effect the route I select. Even last week Jim Steck thought he would meet us at the Stone Barns and it was one of the few weeks we bypassed them.
I would say just skip this week.
