  • Aug 29, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Turkey Mountain  Hike

OR enter Peter Pratt's Inn, Yorktown Heights. GPS will get you on route 118, when gps tells you to turn off route 118, entrance to preserve is on the  opposite side of rt 118 (If it says turn left - you then turn right.).

Distance - just under 3 miles

Pace - Moderate up, slow down

Time - Depending on conditions about 1  1/2+ hours

Conditions - Should be dry and we will have some moonlight.

"Turkey Mountain and it's surrounding parkland of 150 acres are a triumph of public purpose. The measure of a strong community is not just what it does to preserve and promote civilized culture, but what it also does to maintain an oasis, or retreat, for the wild." (lohud.com, "A Trip Up Turkey Mountain", Dec., 2005)

Join Ted for an opportunity for some quick exercise and socializing. It is a short hike of under 3 miles. The first half of the hike will be slightly fast. The very beginning is a relatively short stretch, allowing for a nice warm up. The next mile is a steady undulating uphill walk (many short uphills and a few longer ones). This is the obvious exercise portion of the hike. We will take a break on top, to take in the views of the Hudson, New Croton Reservoir, Bear Mountain, Storm King and on a clear day the NYC skyline. The return hike will be over the same path, but at a slower pace to accommodate a bit of socializing and taking in nature. Round trip should be around 1 1/2 hours.

DIRECTIONS: From the Taconic Parkway

1.Taconic State Parkway North to the Underhill Avenue exit.

2. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Underhill Ave.

3. At traffic light turn right onto New York State Route 118.

4. Drive 1.6 miles south. You will find the road to the trailhead on the right, directly across from the sign for Peter Pratt's Inn.

1. off 684 at Exit 5  Head west on NY-35 W
for 1.5 miles
2. Turn left onto NY-100 S for 4.3 miles
3. Turn right onto NY-118 N for 1.3
miles to intersection with 129.
4. Turn right with NY 118 and continue up hill and take 1st left (Sign at intersection for Peter Pratt's Inn.) .

Hi Ted, I am bringing a friend as well. We do not have headlamps, but will bring flashlights. ( working today otherwise would pick up lights)

    meredith - yes.

    Headlamps vs. flashlights.

Headlamps are an absolute must if you are scrambling and need 2 free hands or when you are using treking poles. I always reccomend them so you have free hands for grabing a tree for balance. However, that being said, people often do this hike with just a flashlight. FYI - I bought a pkg. of 3 headlamps at Home Depot for $18 including batteries. They are also great for blackouts.

Dry good drainage area, I expect few bugs.

Hi Ted. Tried to message you, not sure it went through.
    1) I'm bringing friend.
    2) We need headlamps if you have extras.
    Thanks!

Parking may b tight, so carpooling is good, even from Murphy's parking lot. Worst case scenario, we park on the shoulder of the entrance road. Looks like the weather gods are treating us well.

This is a good time for me to again post this. When asking a hike leader a specific question, it is best to use the email (message) option. This cuts down on member email clutter. Lisa this happens all the time - do not take it personnal. Yes I will have an extra headlamp you can use.
