The weather is iffy tomorrow.  If travel is conflicted tomorrow, will cancel! Watch for email.

Sudden change!  I cannot attend on the 19th due to a last minute work schedule date change.  If you have already responded for the original 19th date and can't make Tuesday, the 17th, please let us know.

Despite the weather, we had a decent turnout. Glad to see all.

Good conversation. I enjoyed meeting a few more people.

Was looking forward to the discussion, but I have a rush work project I have to finish tonight, so I won't be able to make it after all. Never enough hours in the day! :(

We can always see each other and chat about the movie at the Toast to the Professor gathering.

We can talk about the film at the Toast to the Professor" on January 3rd.

Looks like the roads will be too icey later.
I did see the film Sunday spin ImX 3D, but not HFR. overall enjoyed it.

Sorry, have an assignment due tonight. Saw Smaug over the weekend - had not very much to do with the book, seemingly, but I enjoyed it anyway!

I'm afraid I won't be able to make it tonight, weather isn't permitting me to leave the house at the moment, but I'll see you at the Toast.

  • Ken B.

Looks like NOAA/NWS has now changed the forecast to include freezing rain in the next several hours in the NYC area; that may mean it would be unwise for me to attend tonight, better to head west home into very light snow rather than ice. I'll decide in a half-hour or so though likely will not attend.

    December 17

    • Apulia

      No problem. Totally understandable.

      December 17

  • Apulia

Okay. I will be waiting for whoever shows!

Work schedule is allowing, so I'll be there.

It is still morning and snowing. Will check back later.

OK, we currently have about 2,500 (out of the total of 2.2 million) customers without power, most here in Newark. Nothing widespread so far. Will see how it goes later in the day. Thanks.

    Part 2:

I really disagree with the idea that people have to die for an action sequence to have tension, maybe if your going to flat out realism but if your having to kill off characters purely to get across a sense of threat your simply not doing things right. Just look at Kong, which action sequence was better and more tension filled the dino stampede of Kong fighting the T-rex's? pretty clearly the latter for me yet neither of the "goodies" were killed or even seriously hurt whilst multiple minor characters were killed in the stampede. A lot of the focus has been on DOS being much more of a blockbuster but again I'm not sure I agree. To me it actually felt a lot like AUJ reversed, instead of a slower character driven opening we had a much faster paced one but after the barrel escape things slowed down a lot and only speeded up again right at the very end.

A counter argument from TORn poster (part 1): Thus far in these films I do tend to agree that a lot of the action is excessive and falls behind the more character driven momenets BUT I'm really not seeing the Smaug action scene as falling into that category. No we don't see the Dwaves ripped limb from limb or deep fried but I still felt a real sense of threat there, albeit within the films heightened sense of reality. To start with we get the room full of Dwaven corpses showing Smaugs hardywork but beyond that I didn't get the sense of characters fighting within themselves I did in Goblin town or the Barrel escape. In those scenes I got the sense things could go on for half an hour and there wouldn't be any real threat, with Smaug(and Azog at the end of AUJ) I did get the sense of characters hanging on by the edge of their teeth.

NOAA is showing from 2 to 5 inches of snow for me, so I’ll leave for work early and drive to Newark to avoid it before it starts, and it will be long over by the time the meetup is done. Less forecast for NYC area. Potential glitch is that I have one of my three per year “volunteer” weeks as on call for storm duty in our emergency electric delivery response center, but the storm doesn’t look like it will result in customer outages so should be OK. Having missed the group viewing because of a last minute work assignment, I did manage to see the film in IMAX 3D yesterday, so need not worry about spoilers. ;-)

Ok. Sounds like I should be there to wait to for anyone who shows.

Still wanting to be part of the group but I'm not yet able to socialize due to my medical status (probably won't even be able to see DoS until it's on cable/dvd/ppv) but wanted to say hey to those I've met and hoping to meet others when possible.

Hello, Joshua. Tomorrow's weather puts some doubt as to this coming meeting. Perhaps you can make the next.

Shoot, any night but tomorrow night (snow predicted - good time to be curled up with a good book and stay home)....but I may change my RSVP if the weather flops.

Sorry, but I am talked out discussing the film from 2 whole days of Mythmoot... Too bad you all could not be there with Dennis, Kathy and me. It was simply terrific. Not a dull moment. And we saw the film in HFR, which makes all the diff. Seeing it in anything less makes it one long blur!! I'll send along notice when the papers are published. Discussions were lively and at times hilarious! If you can't be at the Meetup, be sure to tune in to TORn live at 8pm on Tues...
