The Toast to the Professor Meetup-NYC Area Friends of Tolkien & Fantasy Meetup

On the 3rd January 1892 JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, on this day each year Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author.

The toast is "The Professor".

For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies:

To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words 'The Professor' before taking a sip (or swig, if that's more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.

Had a great time with everyone, as always. I'd happily go to more meetups at this location since I live right there. ;)

Thank you all for making me feel welcome! Where else would I have a chance to talk about The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, AND Breaking Bad in the same place? Had a great time and am looking forward to the next event.

Hello everyone. Sounds like everyone had a good time. Wish I could have attended but I lost my baby sitter.

Last minute update for tomorrow's TOAST to the Professor at Druids ... Remember to ask for separate checks. This is very important! Also, please, be considerate of the staff at Druids. And lastly ... have a great time!

Okay Tolkien peeps, we have a new location for our toast on Thursday, Jan 3rd, and its menu is American/Irish fare. Unfortunately, we will not be able to "dress up" the place with Tolkien / LOTR memorabilia. Mgmt is okay if we bring our own Tolkienesque mugs etc. Also, remember to ask for separate checks when you order refreshment, and treat the staff well. In the meantime, I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays, and The Hobbit movie.

I've just come from inspecting DRUIDS at[masked]th Avenue at 50th Street. The restaurant, with restrooms, is all one level with one step up from the sidewalk. The bar / restaurant isn't very big and we only have space at the back for 20 people. I see that we have 17 RSVPs and only room for 3 more meetup peeps. If you wish to bring a guest, please, check with me or Carole [Apulia] first. Besides the menu, which Timdalf provided through a link, there is a nice variety of daily specials. Also, and very important, when ordering your food / drink ask for separate checks. One last thing, we can have Tolkien / LOTR / Hobbit items on the tables, but Mgmt says NOT on the walls. I am sorry Timdalf :-( In the meantime, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday[s].

This place is in my neighborhood. The staff are friendly and the vibe remains pretty low-key in the midst of some annoying sports bars!

As before, it looks like a wonderful place... Just hope it isn't to noisy! We are meeting in order to be able to talk to each other!!

Sadly, we cannot have our gathering at the Stone Creek Lounge on the 3rd, and I have a few alternatives for the Toast. Will post the new location very soon.
