Grand Canyon South Rim or Inner Gorge Trek & Las Vegas Trip

  • Nov 23, 2012 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

I've been wanting to do this for some time and 2012 seems to be the year to do it. I'm still in the research phase of the trip so details will begin to trickle in as we get close to the RSVP cut off date but having done some basic research, November is the best month to go either into the south rim and maybe in the inner gorge which is excruciatingly hot during the summer months. Given that this is Thanksgiving weekend, it may be the perfect time to schedule a week of to do this amazing trip!

As for planning, some things I do know:

  • We will be hiking one of the more common trails as our own group. I want this to be enjoyable for all levels but the trip is geared primarily towards beginners/intermediates.
  • Las Vegas is optional, not mandatory. It would be great to wrap up this trip with a drive to Vegas for a night or two before we head home however this will be based on the desires of the group.

Itinerary:

  • 11/23: Travel Day
  • 11/24: Day 1 Grand Canyon Trek
  • 11/25: Day 2 Grand Canyon Trek OPTIONAL
  • 11/26: Day 3 Grand Canyon Trek (Those opting out of Day 2 will hike out of the park today and head back to airport)
  • 11/27: Trek out of Grand Canyon
  • 11/28: Travel Day - Las Vegas
  • 11/29: Day 1 Las Vegas
  • 11/30: Day 2 Las Vegas (Folks can travel home this day as well)
  • 12/1: Travel to NYC - All

Complete itinerary is accessible via google docs-http://tinyurl.com/983aolu. Send me your email address if you'd like to view complete itinerary.

Costs:

  • $175 - Deposit for 2 nights at the Flagstaff hostel, transportation to/from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon, entry fee & permit.
  • @$350 - R/T Airfare
  • @$200 - For Grand Canyon including 3 nights/4 days of food, miscellaneous expenses.
  • ?? - Las Vegas TBD

Fees do not include recommended equipment!

Recommended Equipment*:

  • 3 Season Tent (We will need to share tents so please be sure confirm in your RSVP if you need a tent or have a tent to share)
  • Backpack (approx. 25lbs.-30lbs.)
  • Sleeping bag (0 degree rating)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Trekking poles
  • Micro spikes
  • Polyester/synthetic hiking clothing - layers are recommended
  • Hiking Boots
  • Headlamp
  • Hat, Gloves
  • 2 1 liter bottles or 2-3 liter camel bag for water
  • Water purifying tablets or a water filter
  • Food for 4 days/3 night
  • Stove, pots, utensils (you could cook in the pit if you prefer)

*Recommended equipment could cost you approximately $700-$1000 depending on the quality you are looking for. Tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and sleeping pads can be rented if desired.

This trek goes down as the best hiking experience to date.. obviously the Catskills and Adirondacks are pristine, but trotting 20+ miles down and up a terrain set amid millions of years of rock, crossing the Colorado River and staying in plush campground sites was well worth the trek to and from Flagstaff and Phoenix.

Oh, I forgot - as per our Scrabble game:
    Lego - http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Lego
    Zoid - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoid

What do I win again? :D

    December 6, 2012

    • Mike

Zoid is acceptable..not Lego. Rules are rules!

    • Sagar

I second Mike on this. Lego says trademark.

What an amazing trip! The weather was great, the trails were easy to follow and each campsite had a character of their own. Kudos to the entire team for completing 17 miles, with a 4780 ft. descent and a 4380 ft. ascent over the course of 3 nights/4 days. A special shout out to Diana, Sagar and B-day Mike for also doing the 12 mile RT from Bright Angel Campground to Ribbon Falls. Mike and I did a 5 mile RT Clear Creek trail due to hurting my ankle on the descent to Bright Angel on Day 1 (yikes)!! The important thing is we made it out of our own will and caught so many amazing vistas in the process. After the Canyon, we headed for Sedona was great added stop where we climbed to Cathedral Rock with a stop at the ghost town of Jerome before finally reaching Las Vegas. In short, an amazing (thought short) road trip. Please be sure to post pics, Mike and I have started doing so in FB. Can't wait to see them!

I host thanksgiving - big family day...but I am hiking the AT in March for my 60th Bday and am walking 5 days a week in preparation.
South Mountain reservation(35 minutes from Penn Station) is my weekday hike and usually do a local hike for longer distance on Sundays..and doing local Jersey and New York AT overnighters between now and March 2013. All are welcomed to join in ALSO - REI has their quarterly parking lot sale on 9/23 and things are usually 70% off right across the board. This is the East Hanover NJ store and all the returns from the whole east coast funnel to these sales. Starts at 9..most get there at 6:00 AM

As promised, I've drafted a tentative itinerary and gear list. This is still a work in progress so be sure to check back later for more details: http://tinyurl.com/983aolu. You will need to provide me with your email address if you're interested in accessing the document.

Lastly, I have updated the final RSVP date to Sept. 7th as well as added a deposit fee for the trip. The deposit is not only to guarantee your spot but will also be used towards 2 nights at a hostel and shuttle service from the airport to flagstaff & to/from the grand canyon. Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

      August 10, 2012
